Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jamie Nusser. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Jamie, thanks for joining us today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard.
We have taken an interesting road to get to Interior Design, and I think our background really makes us think in a more holistic way compared to most of the industry. We started out in the Architecture industry and gradually found our way to Interiors, so we begin every project from the building’s bones up. We focus on the backdrop for our design first, making sure the building layout, natural lighting, and flow of the spaces is perfect before starting on any materials or furniture design. Sometimes this means we spend half of our time getting that portion of the process just right, but the end result is worth it, a harmonious design in which all of the different elements are aligned from the start.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started my design career early when I stumbled into a job in high school working at a local Architecture firm. This began my love for design and brought me to the University of Colorado to study architecture. After graduating I spent a year working in Sydney Australia at a kitchen and bath showroom before eventually making my way back to Colorado. I worked in the architecture and interior design fields for six years before deciding to open my own studio. With J Designs, I really wanted to explore my own style and process, which combined all of my experiences into a distinctive offering to clients.
J Designs is a full service interior designer, with a focus on high-end residential and boutique commercial spaces. We offer a design customized to each client and to each space, we are not going for a repeated trendy look, but rather a project that reflects the unique people that we are designing for. Over the years we have become known among our clients for the custom designed and built furniture pieces that we bring into each project. These are amazing touches that reflect the specific circumstances of the project and showcase the creative stage we are in at the specific moment of the project.
Our goal is to be your streamlined design solution. Construction is hard, I’m not going to lie, I have been around the design and construction industry for almost twenty years and it never ceases to amaze me how many problems come up over the course of building a project. With our architecture and construction background, we bring a knowledge of the full planning and construction process. This allows us to anticipate potential issues and get ahead of them so the projects run more smoothly and there is less stress placed on both the client and the builder.
With J Designs, I have been most proud of the fact that we have been able to maintain a high quality of design through all of our projects large and small. When I look back at every project we have done over the years, there are still one-of-a kind details that stick out in my memory for each one. We are constantly evolving and we want our clients to be a part of the process. The most fun we have is challenging ourselves and coming up with innovative ideas.

Have you ever had to pivot?
About two years ago my husband job relocated him out to Santa Monica California from Denver. When this happened J Designs was just beginning to hit its stride and most of our clients were around Colorado’s front range and up in the mountains. At the time we were up in the air as to what the best direction for the company would be. Fast forward to today and we now have successfully just opened a second design studio in Venice Beach California while keeping the Colorado studio going strong as well. While there have been some growing pains (can anyone say multi-state insurance and figuring out all of the licenses and tax filings ☹) it turned into a fun project and an exciting opportunity.

Can you open up about how you funded your business?
From the beginning I knew that I wanted to be able to remain creative and nimble and that meant not taking out any loans or bringing in investors to start the business. I started out in my living room with my laptop and boot-strapped my way up to today, keeping that same mentality of building the business in line with the project pipeline versus taking on outside capital. There are many options for how to go about it, but for me it was just less stressful and more intuitive this way.
