We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jamie Newitt a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jamie , thanks for joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
It’s funny because I’ve spent so much time learning the craft by honing musical skills, learning the rules, proper technique, theory, the do’s and don’ts etc – having gone to music school and all that. But now I’m trying to unlearn a lot of that engrained training. I’ve come to realize that when it comes to art, all the “rules” that we follow as law are completely made up. So with that, I’m trying to let only expression, experimentation, and feeling be the guide.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a musician/producer/digital creator. I make and release music “one man band style” in which i write the music, play all the instruments, sing, record, mix, produce, & engineer it.
i have a fondness for soul, jazz, hiphop and experimental music. Generally all my recordings are recorded to tape and have a vintage/lofi quality to them which i think aids in what I’m trying to express.
I have been working with two record labels as of late – Inner Ocean Records based in Calgary Canada and Tiki Tumbao records based in Miami. Through them I’ve released a few vinyl records and a cassette tape. I also create visuals and music videos for most of my music that are released but also used in live performances.
Live performances of tiny.blips involve mixed media with music, projections, and live art for an immersive experience.

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
Beauty is Embarrassing – the documentary of artist Wayne White.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Art allows us to express things beyond words, feelings, interactions etc. the reward is being able to get these intangible aspects of your being out. I feel grateful to be able to create because I truly believe that everyone is capable of being an artist/creative but that they don’t always have the chance to tap into it. Related to this, I’ve always found it exciting that there’s literally no limit to one’s creativity, it’s infinite. Whereas in other aspects of our physical selves there are defined limits ie: how fast you can run.
