We were lucky to catch up with Jamie McAfee recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jamie, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
My comic book Alexis Wyle is the most meaningful project I have worked on. My lead character, Alexis, represents strength, hope, and rebellion. She is all things I think the world needs to be a hero. A young woman is chosen to take on the greatest evil, fighting for herself and others while also allowing herself to mourn what was taken from her. This is a story that I first wrote now over 14 years ago. It was a project I placed to the side because I was unsure how I could bring it to life, as there were elements to the comic process that I had to sit with and learn throughout the years. In 2023, I decided to take the risk of reaching out to the world to crowd-fund so I could get book one created. The response was wonderful. This is meaningful because, much like my character does within her dark realm, I did not give up on bringing a story that I knew could influence its reader in a light that takes them outside of their own mind and allows them to think. This is meaningful to me because it is one of my biggest dreams that I have accomplished, and I am proud of that. It is also a story I look forward to continuing with book two.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a writer and creator of children’s books (There’s a Spider in Mom’s car, Bee Leave Me, The Pumpkin Princess, etc.), comic books (Alexis Wyle), poetry, screenplays, and more. I have been writing since I could hold a pen and have always enjoyed it. I love dreaming up new worlds for people to enjoy and new stories for kids and adults alike to relate to. Writing is just something I’ve always done, and I couldn’t imagine it any other way. I am proud of my determination to complete the projects I have, even with roadblocks. My work is for people who enjoy original stories that are built to inspire, engage, and move readers. I have a lot coming up to be excited about, and I hope people will follow along for the journey.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Society needs to support artists now more than ever. Look up indie artists of all types, from writers to illustrators. Watch indie films, and go to festivals that feature indie artists. Always check if you can get the creators’ work directly from them, as a lot of big box companies do not allow the earnings to fall down to the creator. It’s very difficult to be an indie writer, so those who are really working hard, and need to know they are reaching people.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding part of being a creative is meeting people who have enjoyed your work. I have started to do various events and conventions, and it’s amazing to just meet people who are completely loving something that came from your mind. Inspiring girls to see that, just like seeing a strong woman or a man who wants to be a part of the story. It’s very cool.
