Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jamie Hogan. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jamie, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
I illustrated a children’s book about light pollution titled Skywatcher. I learned quite a bit during research that gave me more material than could fit in a picture book. I do not have an agent, so I submitted to publishers every six months, and each time, the book evolved. It was a worthy process!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am an illustrator and author. I studied illustration at Rhode Island School of Design, but the diligence required to become a freelance illustrator was learned on the streets of Boston, MA, hauling my portfolio around back in the days before the internet. I consider my illustration services to be a collaborative effort with my clients. Communicating both visually and verbally is my strength. Teaching illustration for many years at Maine College of Art helped to distill my approach, which involves what I call magical realism. I currently work in pastels with some digital refinements, and nature themes are prevalent in my brand.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Society can provide greater respect for artists with better pay, funding opportunities, and media coverage.
Can you share your view on NFTs? (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
I consider the jury still out on NFTs, given the recent collapse in cryptocurrency. The values seem abstract, random, and overrated.
