We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jamie Burgess. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jamie below.
Alright, Jamie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. One of the most important things we can do as business owners is ensure that our customers feel appreciated. What’s something you’ve done or seen a business owner do to help a customer feel valued?
With every project, I strive to build relationships with each of my customers, while exceeding their expectations. For me, the opportunity to build a piece for someone is more than a job; it is an opportunity to build lasting relationships. With each piece I build, I incorporate something special for the client that will be cherished for years. As I am discussing the project plans with the customer, I focus on the interests of the customer and why this particular piece is special to them. It is gratifying to surprise my customers with an unexpected addition to the project that adds sentimental value to the piece.
Jamie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
As I began my woodworking career in 2014, I quickly noticed that the hobby was more of a passion. I enjoyed working with my hands and creating pieces from what starts as a simple idea. I have always had an artistic nature and enjoy sharing that passion with others. The ability to work alongside others to make their dreams become a reality is extremely gratifying. Not only do I get to share my passion with others, I also get to build strong, lasting friendships. What sets Holy City Woodwork’s apart from other companies is the connection that we share with our clients. We are interested in the customer, not the final sale. We take our time with each build and every piece is custom built to the customers request. We build a variety of products from entertainment centers, built-ins, wall décor, and much more.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Like many other business’s faced, the COVID pandemic was a difficult time to navigate through. Communicating with customers concerning projects were done over the phone, Installs were done differently, and prices of materials skyrocketed while peoples incomes dropped. However, that never slowed us down. We worked through all of the difficulties and made sure to accommodate the customer in any way we could. Even though material prices increased, we gladly reduced our prices to help cover the decrease in peoples income. There were many projects during this time frame where we basically broke even. However, several of those same customers have returned to us when the pandemic restrictions lifted for another opportunity to work together. Putting the customer first is a key component to the success of any business.
Have you ever had to pivot?
In 2014, my woodworking passion started with building electric guitars and luthier repairs. Although I thoroughly enjoyed building and working on wooden instruments, I realized that I wanted to work alongside others and create friendships. This meant that I had to get outside of the shop and find business elsewhere. That’s when I decided to expand my business by creating more than guitars, and building larger, custom pieces for others. Looking back, it was a great decision; one that I would not change, or have done differently.
