We were lucky to catch up with Jamie And Jeena Anderson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jamie and Jeena , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
Jeena and I participated in our church (at the time) talent show in high school. It was the first time that we performed together, just the two of us. After we played and sang our cover of “White Fences” by Needtobreathe – Jeena played the mandolin, I played guitar. People come up to us that night telling us they’d pay to hear more music from us. That surpassed our expectation of encouragement and up until then it was something that we did for fun and a creative outlet. The response that we received from that talent show was the initial mold to the desire of pursing music as a profession.

Jamie and Jeena , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Fox and the Bear is an award-winning indie alternative sister duo based in Norfolk, VA. Their music is characterized by ethereal harmonies and resonating stories, and they use a variety of instruments, including a kick drum made from their great grandmother’s suitcase. They have released a self-titled EP and a debut album, ” Will Be Alright,” and have opened for national touring acts such as Trevor Hall and Larkin Poe, and The Last Bison. Fans rave about their live performances and the purity and beauty of their voices.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The phenomenon that we have the ability to create something that is significant and meaningful to ourselves, and that can mean something and be significant for some one else. That we can resonate and connect with a stranger.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Jeena and I remember a show that we had earlier on in our journey performing live. The show was in our neighboring state about 2 hours away from where we lived at the time. It was a 3 hour gig at a nicer beachy bar/restaurant. When we arrived we were told that we were going to be playing on the 3rd floor, outside (in July), rather than inside of the lovely first floor area that we had walked into. Hauling all of our gear and sound equipment up the narrow, angled stairs, we were presented to a small, hall -wall -like area that was closer to the bathrooms than the people seated at the bar in the heat. We were facing a walk-in freezer and had to tape our sound system wires around the door frame of the even narrower hall that lead through to the bathrooms. We remember the dread and annoyance and discouragement of that show. However, we had a little tantrum inside ourselves about it, then managed to make the best of what we had. We strived to keep the mindset of bringing our best performance, even if we only have a hand-full of people looking back at us. Because they deserve that just as much as a crowded room on the first floor with AC. It was also practice for us, a chance to grow and feel all aspects of being a musician. That show is one of our proudest show memories.
