We recently connected with Jamia Hicks and have shared our conversation below.
Jamia, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
I would say I definitely wasn’t a person who took huge risk, but I’ve always taken some sort of a risk in life even as a child. I was considered the wild child the one who took chances and did things others wouldn’t. But, this risk started my senior year of college, I can say I have Covid to thank for this risk, Covid really opened my eyes to see how important it is to work for yourself. Which all in all, it was God telling me to stop thinking small and that there is so much more for me to do. So I took a leap of faith, I started in a network marketing company where I met and networked with so many people, and that led me to starting my own cleaning company and has led to many more business ventures that I have started. So I am forever grateful for that. I have been in the entrepreneurial space for about 3 going into 4 years now, all from that risk and I can honestly say it has changed my life forever. I know that taking a risk can be so scary especially not knowing how it will go, what will come of it, will you have enough income to take care of your bills and your family, etc, but the only word I can put on it is FAITH. Just trusting God to guide me, and it has made all the difference.
Jamia, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hi everyone, I am Jamia Hicks. I am currently 24 years old, I started walking into entrepreneurship at 20 going into my 21st birthday. I started out with network marketing which was a blast, I enjoyed it so much I met so many amazing people with different variations of backgrounds and experiences, it was definitely amazing I can truly say. I am to owner of Immaculate Cleaning Company of North Carolina. We service both residential and commercial properties, we provide basic cleans, deep cleans, move in/out deep cleans, recurring services, post construction cleans, etc. I can say when I first started I was just giving it a try to see what it could be, I never expected it to be constantly expanding and growing into what it is today, I am so grateful. Thank you God. I can truly say after putting hard work, dedication, long days/nights, and tears, I value my company and what we do so much. Just because I know what it’s like to see this thing from the very beginning when it was me cleaning properties by myself, and on those long days when I wanted to give up or say this is too much, or run into a difficult time, I would say to myself “You’re not doing this for you, you’re doing this for your company, you’re doing this for your family, you’re doing this for your generations to come, and you’re doing this for all the girls and young women out there who come from small towns just like you.”
Stepping into the shoes and mindsets of our customers is truly where we’re able to say okay what exactly would they want. Just thinking of when you’re in a clean environment it helps you perform better and it gives you a peace of mind, so to see that reaction in our clients means the world to us. To know that we’re able to make that difference, so that’s one less thing they have to worry about is amazing. What sets us apart from others? I just allow our quality to speak for itself, we provide top quality cleaning services, and truly overall we really care. I have always been very big on customer service, so we are sure to listen to their needs when they give us a call because it’s important and we want our customers to know their voice is heard. You ask, we deliver. I am most proud of everything, just because I look at everything in astonishment because we’ve accomplished so much in such a short amount of time, I am so grateful to see where we are headed. We take pride in what we do, because our clients/customers deserve the best of the best and that’s what we are here to do.
Any advice for managing a team?
So I don’t like to look at myself as a manager, because I like to look at myself as a leader setting the tone for our company. Team work makes the dream work, that’s the only way it can happen is having a strong team on your side. It is challenging at times because, you’re interacting with different people who have different personalities and different perspectives so it makes it challenging at times because you’re learning how to interact with each person in their individual way. We have built a culture, there are times where I’ll go to a job with them and we’re in there together working just to see how they are working together, how the cleaning process is going, to be sure everything is getting done that needs to get done, etc., but it also gives me that time with the teams to bond with them. We have company outings implemented that allows the teams to get together and to mingle/socialize with one another.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
This is going to sound a little crazy. But I funded my business completely from my pockets. When I say I really worked and worked to be where I am today, I truly meant it, when I say Faith. I mean FAITH. I couldn’t be here without God, which is why I just keep referring back and thanking him because this was all God. Ok, so if I had to do it again I could because I know I would not fail and that’s just how I was moving & operating, which is the same way today. But I would not recommend starting your business this way but at the time the lack of knowledge I had about business, business credit, loans etc. Please utilize your resources around you, research and find resources, there are millions out there believe me.
