Jami, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
In 2019, I held the position of counter manager for Lancôme, but unfortunately, I found myself unfulfilled in the role. As a makeup artist on the side, my passion for the craft continued to grow, yet I felt hindered by the demands of my primary job. The company’s emphasis on sales numbers overshadowed the artistic aspects of cosmetics sales, which was particularly disappointing given Lancôme’s stature in the industry. The focus on upselling and adding extras created a sense of dread for me, making it challenging to come to work. After several years with the brand, I made the decision to devote myself fully to being a professional makeup artist. I submitted my resignation and have not looked back since. It was the most prudent decision I have ever made, and I am proud to have taken a risk on myself. By doing so, I have proven that betting on oneself can lead to success, and I firmly believe that taking calculated risks is essential to achieving one’s goals.

During my college years, I founded MAKEUPJAMI.XO, leveraging my passion for hair and makeup to establish a viable business. Upon becoming pregnant during my sophomore year, I channeled my energy into perfecting my craft, recognizing the importance of securing a stable future. Through persistent practice and YouTube tutorials, I refined my skills, leading to the creation of my own YouTube channel. Inspired by accomplished makeup artists like Jackie Aina, I strive for excellence in my field. Over the course of my decade-long career, I have had the privilege of working with diverse clients everywhere from KY to NYC and even Mexico. A notable highlight was collaborating with LeLe from SWV in 2021. My unwavering dedication to my profession has been instrumental in my achievements, and I am grateful for the opportunities that have come my way.


What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Facebook has been the best place for me to gain new clients! I’m constantly getting tagged in post and on group pages about makeup & skincare and I appreciate that so much because anyone willing to ever consider or my business for work is a blessing! I love those who love and support me!


How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
I make my clients feel like family! I talk to them outside of the business. Checking in and making sure they’re doing good physically and mental just like I would do my friends! Treating people like people and not like customers will get any business owner far in the game!
