We were lucky to catch up with Jamey Price recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jamey, thanks for joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
Motorsport photography in terms of of learning the craft, simply takes doing it to get better at it. The more races you attend, the better you get. You learn to use the camera, lenses, follow the light, understand racing. It’s very much a 10,000 hours to become an expert type profession.

Jamey, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a professional motorsport photographer, and have worked in racing full time for the last 10 years covering, F1, NASCAR, Indycar, IMSA, SRO events and World Endurance Championship.
I started by simply going to races and learning the craft slowly over time.
Much of my work simply revolves around attending a race, and sharing my experiences at that event with a camera, and then helping my clients show what their weekend was like for their drivers, mechanics and fans.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I think people forget that social media is simply another tool to advertise your business. It’s not just funny memes and political rants. It’s a legitimate way to promote your business. I have a background in business and sales, and as a visual creative, I immediately saw the potential of platfroms like Instagram to grow my business to potential teams, drivers, OEMs and fans who want to engage with, and use my services.
Yes, share all the cat memes and pictures of your sister’s kid’s 3rd birthday you want, but it wont grow your business.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
As always, the best way to support creatives is to not only share their work on social media, and engage with it, but also to purchase whatever it is they sell. If you want a print, buy a print. If you like the work share the work. All those things help.
