Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jameson Ray. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jameson, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Almost all entrepreneurs have had to decide whether to start now or later? There are always pros and cons for waiting and so we’d love to hear what you think about your decision in retrospect. If you could go back in time, would you have started your business sooner, later or at the exact time you started?
Looking back on things I definitely wish I would’ve gotten serious about my craft sooner in life. I’ve had a camera for about 3 or 4 years now but I didn’t start getting serious about photography until about a year and a half ago. If would’ve been more serious about photography earlier on I would think I would be a lot further along. I used to have a lot more time on my hands back then, but these days it just seems like the weeks are flying by. I’m grateful to God that my business is doing as well as it is doing right now but I still find it hard to find time to keep growing my craft and manage my business simultaneously. At the end of the day it is a pretty good problem to have so let me not complain too much!
Jameson, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Jameson Ray and I am a photographer based in the DFW area. I am truly in love with photography! I remember buying my first camera as a way to simply help out my friends who needed some pictures. Wasn’t anything too serious at all. 4 years later I am a full blown successful photographer. I can certainly didn’t see my life going in this direction all but what can I say. I love this stuff. I literally get sad if i go a week without shooting something.
I want people to know that I don’t do this for the the money. I am an artist first and foremost. I’m not out here trying to make a quick buck. I’m simply looking for the next creative journey to go on!
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I have a always struggled with social media. Over the last several months I’ve gone from 200 followers to 1200 followers but it wasn’t until I understood these three vital takeaways.
Consistency is key. Social media rewards you for constantly using the platform. It is essential to having a thriving business in 2022.
More people are watching you than you think! I cannot tell you how many times I’ve made a post and only gotten 20 likes and maybe one comment. I know if feels like nobody is paying attention but sometimes people just want to see that you are serious before they invest their money into your business.
Social Media is your friend not your adversary. I fought using social media for long for a myriad of reasons. Social media is just a tool. You don’t have have to share your entire life on it but human beings are social creatures and we want connect with each other.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
I this is going to sound very elementary but it is my truth. I was not able to grow my clientele until I grew in my craft. In other words i got really good at what I do. I cannot stress how important this is! Once you start to master your craft two things will happen.
1. You will gain confidence in yourself. I can confidently say I in my mind I one of the top 10 photographers in Dallas. Now whether that is true or not is irrelevant. Why? Because I take that energy everywhere I go. My customers smell it on me. I know that I can deliver every time. Because I have confidence in myself they have confidence in me.
2. Your work speaks for itself. This is the other side of that coin. I don’t just think I’m good others also think I’m that guy. I get so many clients that reach out to me with this phrase “Hey Jameson I saw the photos you did for (nameless client) can you do something similar for me…” Let your work work for you!
