We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful James Williams. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with James below.
James, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
At around 11 or 12 years old, I started designing and sketching clothing, freely exploring different colors and patterns. Fashion seemed to come instinctively to me. My family, particularly my parents and grandmothers, were fashion-conscious, which likely played a role in shaping my interest. I’ve always maintained that fashion is in my blood. However, growing up in the South, I wasn’t aware of the potential for a fashion career. It wasn’t until my move to Los Angeles in 2001 that I discovered I could turn my creativity into a career.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I was born in Los Angeles, California, but my father’s southern roots led us to Mobile, Alabama, where I spent my formative years. It was in high school that I began to explore my passion for fashion, discovering my unique style and flair. I recall purchasing a pair of square-toed shoes by Tommy Hilfiger, which sparked conversation and concerns from my peers and family. This early experience instilled in me the confidence to embrace my individuality and pursue my fashion aspirations. Upon returning to Los Angeles in 2001, I dedicated myself to studying fashion at Brooks College and the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising. This education laid the foundation for my successful career in visual merchandising, which spanned over two decades. My innate ability to elevate a person’s style without breaking the bank has been a hallmark of my career. As my grandmother once advised, ‘Baby, you have to know fabrics.’ I’ve carried this wisdom with me, prioritizing quality, texture, and aesthetic over brand names and price tags. My passion for empowering individuals through fashion has been a driving force behind my work, and I take pride in knowing that my clients feel their best when styled by me.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
What I find most fulfilling as a creative is witnessing the profound transformation that occurs in people after they’ve experienced the editorial guidance of James, unlocking new possibilities and perspectives.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
In 2016, I chose to transform my passion into a career by refining my social media presence and using fashion as a means to inspire others. I’ve made a conscious effort to showcase affordable and high-end looks with a polished, luxurious flair. My advice to newcomers is to unleash your creativity, stay committed, and continually seek out opportunities to evolve and refine your craft.
