We were lucky to catch up with James Weingarten recently and have shared our conversation below.
James , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Almost every entrepreneur we know has considered donating a portion of their sales to an organization or cause – how did you make the decision of whether to donate? We’d love to hear the backstory if you’re open to sharing the details.
FLOAT donates $8 from every item sold to our charity partners. Businesses are in a unique position to affect positive change in the world. If you’re going to buy a new shirt you may as well do some good while you’re at it!

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I spent my childhood biking, skiing and climbing in the mountains of Colorado with my dad and brother which fostered a deep love for the outdoors in me. This combined with my inherent love for animals and a desire to give back to our planet drove me to found FLOAT in 2013. FLOAT partners with what we believe to be the best animal and environmentally based non-profits in the world and create weeklong apparel campaigns featuring designs that will hit home with their supporters. We spotlight new organizations with new designs every Monday and donate $8 from every item sold. FLOAT handles all the heavy lifting of design, sale, printing, shipping and customer service that’s involved with running an online store for them so they can focus on doing what they do best (saving our planet) and leave the merchandising to us. This creates a win-win situation where our partners have a unique opportunity to engage with their supporters and those same supporters get a shirt that both allows them to show their commitment to the cause and helps spread the word even further. We’re extremely proud of our business model and take great pride in sending out donation checks to our partners every Monday!
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Since day one we’ve been completely transparent to both our clients and supporters. We never make ambiguous statements like “a portion of proceeds will be donated” like so many businesses do. We donate $8 from every item sold to our charity partners and that number is reflected in real-time on our website which instills a strong sense of trust in our business and what we do.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Our reputation for transparency, customer service and honest business has been the biggest factor in growing our clientele. When people are totally clear about what we do and how we do it they have very little hesitation to engage with us…they know we’re the good guys!
