We recently connected with James Tyler Wallace and have shared our conversation below.
James Tyler , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you feel you or your work has ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized? If so, tell us the story and how/why it happened and if there are any interesting learnings or insights you took from the experience?
For sure! This is a pretty common occurrence, especially being a songwriter.
I like to use metaphors when I write songs but there’s a fine line between catchy/generic & way too open for interpretation. I personally think it’s important to find a common ground because (at-least for myself), I’m not only writing songs just because I love creating; I’m writing songs that hopefully can resonate with some people; maybe even plant some seeds.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Biography;
Originally born in Nashville, TN to two singer/songwriter parents, James Tyler Wallace was born & bred to be a part of the music industry in some way or another.
At the age of 12, Wallace began writing poems & quickly learned to filter the weight of the world through his craft. Effortlessly discovering his singing voice at a young age, due to his parents career choices & constantly being surrounded by music, JT eventually found himself singing as much as writing & ultimately falling in love with not only writing songs; but bringing them to life.
In 2014, Wallace left school & moved to Europe to pursue performance & writing in 3 countries. Quickly finding his sound, he came back to the states with a new definition of success in mind. Being famous was no longer the ultimate goal; Writing words that change future generations & helping beginners hone in on their ever evolving sound, was.
Fast forward 10 years & hundreds of songs later; the twenty four year old has no intent to slow down anytime soon & credits God as well as the people around him for keeping him afloat and motivated in the midst of enduring a cut throat industry.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
If you are a songwriter, please hear me out. Be. Patient. While every song you write might not hold pop value or a special place in your heart, it is putting you one song closer to being the writer you thrive to be.
It’s a long journey but I wouldn’t change my career path for anything in the world.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Yeah, so my life has been full of serious main character vibes recently
Without going too far into it, my life was in shambles last year. I didn’t know who I was. I didn’t even know if I wanted to do music anymore. I ended up going to NY for a little bit during the summer for a breather & in the process, fell in love with my best friend’s neighbor.
Long story short, I packed up my life in GA. I now live with her & have no doubts in my mind that music is why I’m here. The amount of support that Hannah and her dad (Dennis) show me is unimaginable. (Plus, it’s too convenient living with your muse).
