We caught up with the brilliant and insightful James Talmadge a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi James, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
When I was around three years old I was intrigued by a small framed picture on the wall across from where I sat at the dinner table. It was a picture of three small boats on the shore of a rocky beach, and it was marvelous.
It was too large to be a photo, I thought, but it looked almost photographic from where I sat. When closer, however, it turned into what my three-year-old mind theorized was a drawing. Something made by a person.
It was in that moment of realization that someone could create such a transfixing scene that I knew I was going to be an artist. I never had any doubts about it.
I’ve created art all my life from early childhood.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m an artist first, but have been a cartoonist, an illustrator, a digital artist, a painter, a musician and a writer. I’m most fortunate to find success in all these areas — and I continue to follow whatever creative interest calls me.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I’m always fishing for inspiration in my stream of consciousness, free to pursue any whim or idea. My success in art directly relates to my following my own interests and ignoring everything else.
