We were lucky to catch up with James Seneca recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, James thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you tell us a bit about who your hero is and the influence they’ve had on you?
My hero is one of my mentors Lou Billittier Sr. who showed me the true example of giving back to the community. Mr. Billittier was from my home town of Buffalo NY and he owned a famous restaurant called Chefs and he always gave back to the Buffalo community. He molded me to be the person that I am today!

James, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
As a former cancer patient myself I am very passionate about helping people and families affected by cancer. Supporting these families with Hope, Support and Compassion goes a long way when you are fighting for your life. We are proud of the fact that we have supported people and families over the past twenty years. Our organization has visited with over 7,000 patients located at The Children’s Hospital Colorado for twenty years. We have gifted over 500 quilts to various facilities for various cancer patients and survivors. My role as a police officer for the Aurora Police Department is assigned to our Special Victim’s Unit where we assist and help various seniors and people with developmental and intellectual disabilities with various cases and resources. I am very blessed to serve our community in many different ways.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Getting cancer (leukemia) 35 years ago has made me a better person and father because I don’t take my health for granted. My chances of survival were only 30 percent chance of beating my cancer. Through this experience I started Cops Fighting Cancer to assist families and children in the state of Colorado for the past twenty years. It’s been an incredible journey because you get the opportunity to meet some amazing people and children.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Never take your health for granted and be open to helping others in the community and count your blessings!
