We recently connected with JAMES RODRIGUEZ and have shared our conversation below.
JAMES, appreciate you joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
Our mission is to empower Latino voices and stories, as we strive to normalize the Latino presence in media. We are dedicated to providing accurate and inclusive representation of Latinos, fostering greater understanding, empathy, and appreciation for the rich diversity of Latino cultures and experiences. Moreover, we are committed to mentoring and coaching Latino creatives, offering them invaluable opportunities to work alongside industry professionals and gain firsthand knowledge of the filmmaking process. Through our collective efforts, we aim to create a media landscape that authentically reflects the vibrant tapestry of the Latino community.
JAMES, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Sure. Currently, I am the Head of Production for Onion Creek Productions here in Austin, Tx. For the past decade I have produced and managed all aspects of film productions from feature films, branded content and music videos. I am ever so grateful for the fruitful career that Onion Creek has given me. They have provided me with the opportunity to learn and grow in this industry.
And now with Saint Primo, I am now directing my own brand of filmmaking by showcasing and highlighting latino artists and filmmakers and using all the knowledge that I have learned over the years.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Yes! Most recently I wanted to direct a music video for an artist that I have been a fan of for years. At the time we had very little money to make this video, however through collaboration with the artists and gathering all the resources that we had available to us, we were able to make a great music video with all the bells and whistles. From locations, extras, production design, wardrobe, props we had it all!
This was our D.I.Y. attempt to make some great visual art and we were successful. Punk rock cinema.
As latinos, I feel we all have something in common; resilience. I strongly believe that any obstacles or challenges that our ancestors and culture endured, has conditioned us to be resourceful, clever and tenacious when it comes to making something from nothing.
By the way, that same music video was selected to premiere at the Cine Las Americas International Film Festival! It was a proud moment for the artists and myself.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I find working with other latino filmmakers and mentoring as a very rewarding aspect. I love fostering connections and providing networking opportunities to new and emerging filmmakers. I try to create an ecosystem where collaboration, mentorship, and support thrive. Saint Primo is a latino filmmakers collective that promotes the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and resources, further empowering emerging filmmakers and strengthening the presence of Latinos in the film industry.
