We were lucky to catch up with James Roan recently and have shared our conversation below.
James, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
There was a point in time where my career was in at a stand still. I felt there was much more that could be done, but I had really figure out how to get to the next level. Simply just “putting out music” wasn’t going to be enough anymore. Not in this day and age where social media has evolved so much. Now everything is seen right before our eyes at all times. When you think of all of the other successful individuals, you’d have to think, how’d they get to that point. They took calculated risks, and put it all on the line to reach their goals. Sacrificing is defiantly one of the most commons things we hear in most success stories.
I decided to travel for what I wanted, and go to different states to network. As an artist, you need your face and brand to be seen everywhere possible. In these current times, things like podcast interviews and radio shows helps a lot. It gives you a more exposure along with more credibility. I’ve flown to both Atlanta and North Carolina in 2022, to be feature on two different platforms. Those two trips alone gained me thousands of views and more people were aware of my music and brand than ever before. I traveled by myself, to places where I din’t know a single soul to get what I wanted. Those were risks I was willing to take.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I got into music at the age of 15, as I learned I had the ability to write and make songs. Since then I’ve released a few projects but I came to a point where my career stops progressing. I began to think more about branding and ways to expand my music. I changed my name to James Roan which was the best move I could’ve done in my career thus far. Since then, I’ve been featured on podcasts, and radio shows due to my music and brand having more likability.
I want to make music for the everyday people, forth to escape their problems have fun and know that hard times don’t last forever. I don’t believe showing off, or showcasing things in a glamorous light is necessary to get my point across. Simply because that’s not everyones reality. I’m most proud of accomplishments thus far and my catalog as it stands even though I haunt reached my goals yet. In one year I’ve released 11 music videos, 3 documentaries and other work. So anyone who follows me will get consistency and high quality work, because I’m that passionate about what I bring to the table.
I plan on going very far with music, writing, voice narrators and directing of films.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is not the money or fame or acollades, for me is the people. Once the people get behind you and they support you, that’s worth more than anything. When you have the ability to influence others and they are singing your lyrics, listening to your music, watching the your videos, and going to your concerts, you’ve won. They are taking time out of their day and spending their hard earned money because they relate to you They belittle in your dream or your vision and to capacity wants to be apart of it. Once the money and fame goes away, they will still be there for you.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
Yes! 50 Cent’s “Hustler Harder, Hustle Smarter” is one the best books I’ve ever read. As we know, he’s one of the most successful poplin our era in terms or music, business and film. For someone like myself in pursuit of similar accomplishments, he’s someone I would take advice from. The book talks about how to go about business deals, how to approach individuals getting into the right mindset, not being so naive or scared to go after your goals. He uses his own personal experienced to further support his rules for success.
