We caught up with the brilliant and insightful James Richardson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, James thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
One of the biggest risks I’ve taken in my life was leaving my small hometown in Oregon for Los Angeles with no money, resources, friends, or family, all in pursuit of a better life. I was a young kid without direction when I made that leap, and it’s been a journey filled with hard lessons and ongoing challenges. However, I feel blessed every day to be able to do what I love and work for myself.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is James Richardson, and I am 31 years old from a small town in Southern Oregon called Klamath Falls. My upbringing was quite different from most; I was born with a chronic terminal illness called cystic fibrosis, which has posed many challenges in my life. However, it also led me to the fitness industry, where fitness itself saved my life in many ways. I wanted to pay forward this blessing to my community and anyone who needed it.
Currently, I train people virtually despite my illness and run my own personal training business here in Los Angeles. I travel across the city to meet clients and help them achieve their best selves. Some of the problems I solve for my clients include weight loss, improving health for their families and children, and offering an outlet for everyday stressors.
Over the years, I’ve developed many lasting friendships and have a strong passion for helping others by listening to their needs and supporting them through their lives. What I’m most proud of is the positive influence and impact I have on the people around me through my story, encouraging them to open up and share their own.”

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
My resilience story is deeply intertwined with my illness. Born with cystic fibrosis, doctors gave me a life expectancy of 19 years and told me I’d never experience normal human activities; I struggled to breathe for 26 years, undergoing four hours of daily treatments to maintain my health. Despite these challenges, through the grace of God, I emerged on the other side.
Throughout these difficult times, I never gave up on myself or my dreams. My resilience continues to motivate and inspire others, demonstrating that even in adversity, perseverance can lead to incredible achievements.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I believe that genuine character and always being transparent and honest with your clients and everyone around you are crucial. In a world filled with deception, it’s best to uphold truthfulness and let things unfold as they’re meant to.
