We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful James Patrick. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with James below.
James, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s the best advice you ever gave to a client? How did they benefit / what was the result? (Please note this response is for education/entertainment purposes only and shouldn’t be construed as advice for the reader)
The greatest thing about coaching is that everyone has their own solutions to their blocks and challenges within. We don’t give advice. That is a true “blesson.” It is simply our job as professionals to use motivational interviewing to ask the right questions, focus on the client strengths and dig the answers out. This can be done through brainstorming and a variety of tools that allow each person to express themselves. As a result, I often find a similar awareness that comes to light with all my clients, and it is this: When it comes to our desired quality of life or goals we wish to achieve, we discover that we are usually the only thing standing in our way. Sure, “life happens,” and there are certain factors that are out of our control, yet, we always have the power of choice. If we want something bad enough we will make it happen no matter what. The question becomes, what is the value? You have the know the value of what you want in order to believe the cost is worth it. And, if you aren’t where you want to be today, realize the cost of today is always a day of your life. We don’t get this time or this day back. So, that really motivates people to make it count and to get out of their own way.
James, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is James Patrick and I am the owner of James Patrick Lifestyle Training. I am an east coast transplant, born and raised in New York and currently living in Scottsdale, AZ. The energy of NYC, the people, the pace was always something which I adored, but was insanity when it came to cost of living. Something about the “fire” that exists within east coast people just fascinates me as much as it is a part of me. It is truly unlike any other place I’ve every been. My parents, who still run their own commercial construction business, served as the template for the things I wanted and raised me on cassette and CD collections (when that was a thing) of professional coaches and motivators like, Tony Robbins, “Personal Power” and “Get the Edge programs.” I continued learning about various topics through the likes of, Dr. Wayne Dyer, Louise Hay, Oprah, Brene Brown, etc. I wanted to take the “fire” I was raised with and the “fire” around me, along with the “blessons” of my greatest teachers and become a coach, a trainer, a motivational presenter. I love inspiring the belief that anything is possible and then going the extra step by, being the accountability partner and a co-creator in the drive that pushes individuals to action and become their next best self. It’s been a calling for as long as I can remember.
So, today it is my mission as a trained and certified professional to fuel passion, expose purpose and motivate actions that inspire a new way to be and thrive through interactive coaching and personal training from the inside out. I serve as a Lifestyle trainer and motivational presenter with a variety of modalities at my disposal, including but not limited to, Health & Wellness Coaching, Behavior Change, Personal Training, Professional Hypnotherapy, Yoga and Firewalk Facilitation. I support the award-winning Southwest Institute of Healing Arts as a contract instructor for various programs that are in alignment with everything that I do.
What sets me apart from so many others in the industry, which my clients and students have attested to, is that I serve with a “tough love” approach that is extremely empathetic and heart centered. I have the ability to use that “east coast fire” to really motivate and activate individual potential for those who are ready to do the work. I don’t support anyone that isn’t truly ready to make a significant change in their lives. You can’t force change. So, I don’t sell or provide my services for the purpose of gathering clients, increasing numbers and “going corporate.” That would compromise the integrity of my practice and why I do what I do. As a result of this standard, I have been blessed with many clients whom I refer to as “members” of my programs to be all inclusive. I have created a solid reputation with my trademark to “make shift happen.”
I am most proud of the the relationships I’ve built over the years. I honor and appreciate the many lives I’ve been able to coach, teach and mentor. I know this is without a doubt why my practice has been a success. I believe the abundance and all wealth (physical, mental, spiritual, emotional, financial) we create for ourselves is not sustainable unless we are creating a better quality of life for others, while we are creating a better quality of life for ourselves.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
I believe success in all forms comes down to mindset and the belief that you are capable. I strongly believe in embracing a child-like mindset, as adults, so that we can play with purpose, live fearlessly but still mindful and hold the belief that we really can do anything as many children do. They hear “NO,” and in many cases, do it anyway. What if we were to embrace that mindset? Go after what we wanted, even when the world around us says, “No! You can’t! You won’t! You shouldn’t!” The response is always a simple one for me and it is these two words: “Watch me!”
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my member base is through the use of authentic and genuine communication. I rarely have to sell anyone on anything. I simply ask them if there is any part of their life they would like to improve or change? Most everyone has an answer. Then, when I ask why they haven’t improved or changed AND ask them what the cost of not doing so is, they begin to think even more. If the value is truly there and they realize that what’s been holding them back (in most cases) truly are their own excuses and stories, then offering my resources makes that “buy in” pretty effortless. I can promise accountability and co-creating a plan of action so that they can take those first steps. While the work is on them, all they have to do is say, “yes” to starting the journey.
