We were lucky to catch up with James Nield recently and have shared our conversation below.

James, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?

As a Creative, I find immense fulfillment in what I do. The dynamic nature of working on sets, navigating diverse environments, and collaborating with new crew members resonates deeply with me. There’s a palpable sense of excitement and camaraderie that comes with each project, fueling my passion for storytelling through cinematography.

While some may yearn for the stability of a conventional job, I cherish the opportunity to immerse myself in the creative process and contribute to the realization of captivating narratives. The prospect of sitting behind a desk all day pales in comparison to the vibrancy and energy of on-set work.

Although I once dabbled extensively in editing and visual effects, I’ve gradually shifted my focus towards the production phase. This transition allows me to leverage my skills in a hands-on capacity, actively shaping the visual language of each project and ultimately getting away from my desk.

In essence, while the path of an artist may be unconventional and at times unpredictable, I wouldn’t trade it for anything. The joy of creating, collaborating, and continuously evolving within my craft brings me a profound sense of happiness and fulfillment.

Originating from Malaysia with a blend of English heritage, I found my start amidst the lively streets of Kuala Lumpur. Surrounded by a fusion of cultures and experiences, my formative years were shaped by the vibrant energy of the city. Within this dynamic environment, I discovered a profound connection to both athletics and the captivating world of cinema.

Raised in a household pulsating with creativity, I was introduced to the magic of storytelling at an early age. Weekly movie nights and trips to the theater with my family ignited a passion for film that only deepened with time. It was during these formative years that I discovered a fascination for the art of theatrical lighting, a subtle yet powerful element that could transform the stage and enhance the narrative.

Upon graduating from high school, I embarked on a transformative internship at a production house, where I witnessed firsthand the inner workings of the entertainment world. This experience served as a catalyst for my decision to pursue a career in filmmaking. Subsequently, I delved into the world of freelance, spending years honing my craft and working on a diverse range of projects. It was through this invaluable experience that I cultivated my skills and passion for visual storytelling, ultimately leading me to make the bold leap to Los Angeles.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?

The most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative lies in the holistic journey of bringing an idea to life. From the initial spark of inspiration to the final execution, every step along the way holds its own magic and fulfillment.

Firstly, there’s the thrill of connecting with clients or producers, discussing visions, and crafting compelling concepts that resonate with audiences. This phase is a testament to creativity and collaboration, where ideas are born and refined through meaningful dialogue and exploration.

Transitioning into pre-production, the meticulous planning and preparation breathe life into the concept, laying the groundwork for seamless execution. Witnessing the synergy between different departments as they utilize their unique skill sets to transform ideas into tangible plans is truly awe-inspiring.

Then comes the exhilarating rush of being on set, where the magic truly unfolds. The energy and camaraderie among crew members, each contributing their expertise to bring the vision to fruition, create an electrifying atmosphere that’s unparalleled.

Finally, the post-production phase adds the finishing touches, refining and polishing the project until it gleams with perfection. Five years ago, I found myself caught in a whirlwind of chaos and creativity that pushed me to the brink of exhaustion. It was the evening before a crucial shoot, and amidst the frantic preparations, a looming dilemma threatened to derail our plans. With no time to spare, I took it upon myself to tackle the daunting task of finalizing the intricate details, including creating the motion graphics for the iPad featured in multiple scenes rather than opting for a green screen setup to save time on tracking and rotoscoping in post-production.

As the hours ticked by and the pressure mounted, I found myself immersed in a relentless cycle of editing, fueled by nothing but sheer determination and copious amounts of Red Bull. Oblivious to the passing time, I soldiered on, my focus unwavering as I delved deeper into the intricacies of the project.

Before I knew it, dawn was breaking, and the realization dawned upon me that I had been toiling away without rest for an astonishing 24 hours straight. It was a surreal moment as I glanced up from my screen to find the director standing before me, a mix of disbelief and admiration etched upon their face.

Despite the exhaustion threatening to consume me, there was no time to dwell on the madness of the situation. With the shoot behind us and the project nearing completion, I summoned every ounce of resilience within me and dove headfirst into the final stretch, fueled by a potent concoction of adrenaline and caffeine.
