We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful James Mulroony. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with James below.
James, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
Back in 2015, when I was a junior in high school I joined my first band named The Brams Hill Band. I was able to get an audition for this band through my friend who knew one of the members. We played through a few songs for the audition and after an hour or so of playing, they asked me to join the band! At this point in my life I had been playing drums for about 5 years but never took it seriously. I learned to play by jamming to my favorite songs but never thought about being a musician for a living. But that all changed when I played my first live show at a place called Rhodes Tavern in New York. We had been practicing to play our first show for months and during that time I started to really fall in love with drumming. I felt such passion for playing with other musicians and creating music with people. But when we played that first show at Rhodes Tavern, something in my brain snapped and from then on I decided this is what I want to do with my life! Be a musician and a performer. I absolutely loved playing music for people and seeing the audience smile and cheer meant the world to me.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Well to start my name is James Mulroony, I grew up and still live in New Jersey! I actually learned how to play the drums from the video game Rock Band back in middle school. I got really good at the drums on Rock Band and luckily my brother had an old First Act kit at home so I took my Rock Band skills to the real kit. After years of playing to my favorite songs, I joined my first band in 2015. Since then, I’ve been in plenty of bands and am currently in four different bands right now! I’m not an official studio drummer but I am always down to collaborate and make great music with any musician, especially when they have ideas they want to come to life. I would say I’m most proud of all the music I create with my friends and band members and being able to put on a good live performance no matter who I’m playing with. One thing I would want my fans to know is that when I create music it comes from the heart and that my main mission is to be able to connect with anyone and everyone through music!

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
To me the most rewarding aspect about being a musician is being able to connect with anyone from anywhere in the world. It doesn’t matter who you are or what you believe in, music has the power to affect anyone on a very personal level. Knowing that you can make someone’s life better with the power of music will always be the most rewarding aspect of being a musician.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Support local musicians!! Buy their merchandise, share their music with your friends, go to their shows, talk about them to anyone you can!! At this point the music industry as a whole is set up for you to fail, so being able to get the support from not only friends and family, but from actual fans means the world to all musicians!
