We were lucky to catch up with James Moore recently and have shared our conversation below.
James, appreciate you joining us today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
Ive had several defining moments in my career. This one always comes to mind first and is a ton of external validation.
In 2018 I was very confused on how to market myself and my business. Social media was still growing and had definitely become the major advertising vehicle for start-ups/small business. I was never a fan of cliche IG posts and always remain true to myself. So instead of posting what everyone else was posting I posted what I wanted to and that caught the eye of the Los Angeles Lakers strength and conditioning coach and celebrity trainer Gunnar Peterson. For whatever reason he started to follow me, like and comment on my posts and over time we began to talk about training. He then invited me to his Beverly Hills gym to train him and a few of his colleagues. I had no clue what I had gotten myself into. I was incredibly nervous and surround by real deal coaches on the professional athlete level. I was given no more than a time to be there and when I arrived I was met by Gunnar, 2 other specialty coaches for the Lakers and the S&C coach for the New York Nets…….and Kate Beckinsale.
When I finally realized this was happening and I was going to be coaching them(not Kate Beckinsale just the coaches) I shifted into gear, grabbed a barbell and did what I do best. Two hours later after going over a few olympic weightlifting drills, discussing training strategy and being horrified by a joke I will not repeat here, I asked him why I was there and why did he reach out to me. I was hoping for a job offer. Some big time, celebrity shit, fancy ass contract. He told me “I think you’re a cool dude who knows his shit and does what he wants, you have a genuine feel about you.”
Over the years we’ve stayed in contact and I’ve shared that story many times. Its helped to keep me on the path of doing what I think is right and knowing that Im in the field of work that sets me on fire and allows me to be successful everyday.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I have always had a fascination with the human body and developing it. I got into personal training and exercise education because I was severely injured at a young age. I had “coaches” in the room but they didn’t know what they were doing and had no business training youth athletes. I suffered for that and made my mess into my message. Your injury is not the end of your road and does not define you.
I also want people to know what their bodies can do for them and how amazing they can be. All it takes is someone to help, to guide, to coach. How to properly move and use your body isn’t taught in school. Most people have no formal education about the thing they use to walk around lol.
I offer 1on1 personal training and have an online team of dedicated individuals.
What sets me apart from most is my desire to keep learning. Every year I get a new certification or re-certify to keep myself up to date so I can provide the best service for my clients. The gym can be VERY intimidating for many people. Who better than me to bring them into gym culture.
I love to build people up! Physically, mentally and emotionally. The words you use are very important. The things you say to and about yourself. That impacts the mental and emotional state. Move your body and stress your muscles. That affects all 3 states. Its more than just a workout that makes you sweat or leaves you tired and breathless. I have an entirely holistic approach from what you say to what you eat and to how you move.
I believe the best way to get more clientele is to better serve your last one.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Always being there! If you’re at the gym i’m at the gym too. I live here and everybody knows it. You cant think about the gym without thinking about me.
People will forget what you say and remember how you made them feel. I believe in this and take issue with it at the same time. Its accurate. If you’re mean to someone they will remember that feeling, forget everything you said even if it was helpful and remember you were mean.
Always leave your clients, guests, members on an emotional high. What is their goal? fulfill that goal in the short term RIGHT NOW
