We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful James Ly. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with James below.
James , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
Learning photography was easy for me because of my background in film. I studied film and media in college, so when I picked up photography, all the essentials I learned from film and video translated over. I believe understanding the basic knowledge of photography propelled me the most in my photography journey. If I had anything specific I wanted to know, I would go to YouTube to help answer my questions.
There were obstacles to learning the business side of things when pursuing photography as a career. I still don’t know everything, but YouTube provides resources and knowledge that helped me progress in my business.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started out shooting with a bunch of friends during college. From there, I grew really passionate about photography and videography. I was shooting on my iPhone at the time and bought my first DSLR camera in 2020.
After two years of shooting, I joined a community group full of other photographers like myself. With the network I received, I was able to get multiple referrals from other photographers to shoot at random events and weddings. The referrals along with doing free shoots helped me build my portfolio to what it is now.
I shoot mainly weddings & events, but I also offer services in graduation, portraits, and family shoots. I am grateful for all the experiences I get to have with my clients and the ever-lasting memories I get to share with them.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source for clients has been from word of mouth. I believe that you should let your work speak for itself. When clients appreciate my work, I feel so honored when they recommend me to family, friends, and colleagues. It gives me validation other than my own that my work is meaningful.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I wouldn’t say I have a large presence in the media space, but working with the community around you does help. I met many like-minded photographers and videographers who encouraged and helped me to pursue my passion.
I realized over the years that numbers don’t mean much. Having a loyal following is more sustainable for my photography career. I’ve been happier knowing that there is a support group that will be alongside me. They assist me whenever I have questions, and I can offer my knowledge about camera equipment or business advice.
