We were lucky to catch up with James Luker recently and have shared our conversation below.
James , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
When I was 6 years old. I got my first guitar and I started to teach myself. However, when I turned 19 and started recording professionally with my now producer and best friend Jay Bales of 7 Days Away who pushed me forward and gave me the confidence to do this full time.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is James Luker. I’m an Outlaw Country Rock artist and newly lead singer of my co-Project Corym.
I am 21 years old and Im from Wayne County, Indiana.
I got started in the music industry when I was 19, however, I been playing guitar and singing since I was 6 years old.
I met a man by the name of Jay Bales. He is the lead singer of 7 days away.
I met him at a mall in my hometown. I grew up listening to his band. He took me under his wing and molded me into the artist I am today. I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for that man. He’s my brother, producer, and mentor. Almost like a sensei haha.
There was so many times I wanted to quit. But the more I built the more I grew and the more I had to lose. I made myself focus and I got focused by getting in shape and just working on my craft everyday all day. I learn something new everyday. I’m very blessed.
The thing I’m most proud of is getting on the billboards in my home state. I also got on the news which is even crazier. Hard work does pay off.
The main thing I want is to take care of my family and friends and give back to the world as much as possible. That’s what I truly want to do. I’ve always wanted too since I was a kid. I always said I would save my family and friends and anyone else I could. Some might call that cliché but it’s always been a goal. When I do that, that’s when I know I have done something.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
When someone tells you your music saves their life.
I had this parent last September comment on one of my Instagram post.
Her son lost his battle with mental health.
I dropped a song last September called “Counting My Days.” I wrote about my experiences with mental health battles.
Anyway, this parent told me my song helped her get Through her sons passing. She typed a whole paragraph of how she wanted to give up and how she was ready to take her own life and my song helped her not. Last I’ve heard she’s been doing great and I hope she is.
I truly cried like a baby knowing I could help someone just by writing how I felt. They feel what I feel. They understand.
When I saw that I knew I was doing something good. I was being a voice for people who didn’t feel they had a voice.
Im truly blessed for that.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Way back in 2016 I started posting videos on Instagram and Facebook.
I got so much hate. I got so many people in and out of school just giving me hell. This continued for 5 and a half years.
However I never gave up on myself.
I kept moving forward and I kept using the hate as fuel. I still do to this day.
I don’t get much hate now and that’s because I worked hard and I got to a spot where I have those who used to hate me listen to me on a regular basis. It’s all about improving and becoming better and knowing you can become better.
