We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful James Keegan. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with James below.
James, appreciate you joining us today. If you had a defining moment that you feel really changed the trajectory of your career, we’d love to hear the story and details.
My professional career was deeply impacted by seeing my mother deteriorate. Psychosomatic illnesses are real and so too is Psychosomatic healing. It took only 18 months for my mother to succumb to mental anguish causing a massive coronary heart attack. My mother passed away in my arms as I tried to resuscitate her. This has led me on a journey to help others heal.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
As in the previous question of defining moments I got into this industry from the tragic death of my mother. Health is about balance (homeostasis a physiological harmonious balance).
What I provide for my clients truly is a balance of mental, physical and emotional well-being. This is done through exercise meditation, breathing exercises, restructuring fascial therapy (deep tissue massage), coaching, nutritional guidance, yoga teacher training and mentorship programs to teach those willing to learn all of the things that I’ve learned over the last 28 years. And all of this is tailored to each individual.
My clientele has a wide range. It could be someone in youth sports a mother of three a professional athlete an elite level collegiate athlete Olympic hopefuls or just someone willing and wanting to learn to optimize their health well-being and prosperity.
Some of the physical problems I help solve for our clients have seeds in their mental body. Helping someone to see the connection and teaching them the tools to be in control of their thoughts to heal their physical bodies. An even bigger problem that I feel very confident in solving with the client is self-doubt and getting them to know their value. This is done through helping them to build a relationship with themselves in some cases for the first time .
I am most proud of the nonprofit organization Integrative Wellness Strategies which Dr. Vanessa Ruiz and I have recently cofounded. Our nonprofit helps those with PTSD and trauma, predominantly working with veterans. We also work with children and every other type of person on earth.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
When I was 20 years old my brother was sentenced to a twenty year prison term. When I was 21 my mother passed away in my arms. A few days later at my lowest point of existence, I was studying for an anatomy exam and the phone rang. It was a friend from middle and high school. He invited me out to party with him and was offering free drugs (when you are at your lowest darkness will come for your soul). Time seemed to stop as I thought about the decision. I choose to stay in and study. Even though I was hurting I wasn’t willing to give up and that showed me my inner strength.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
The year was 2020. The government shut down my yoga studio which was a huge piece to my income. Yes, I had to pivot in a big way. Rarely does a good idea come and interrupt your day. As such I was looking for good thoughts, I was listening to a podcast and it gave me an idea to start a business. I co-founded the company Aspen integrative health, offering home medical services and a variety of other health services from the comfort of your own home. During the pandemic people were not as willing to go to the doctors office and wanted to avoid big gatherings. This niche market opened up and it was the biggest pivot of my life businesswise.
