We caught up with the brilliant and insightful James Kaatz a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
James, appreciate you joining us today. One thing we always find fascinating is how differently entrepreneurs think about revenue growth and cost reductions – both can be powerful ways to improve profitability. What do you spend more of your time and energy on?
We definitely spend the majority of our time as a company growing revenue for our clients and our selves. I personally feel that growing revenue is more critical for sustainable success. The reason is because growing revenue increases your top line and creates more opportunities to invest in innovation, talent, marketing, and infrastructure. Most problems in business can be corrected with appropriate cashflow.
Without revenue growth, cost-cutting alone may shrink the company over time and limit its ability to adapt to market changes, invest in advertising and high-end talent, Also, there’s a ceiling to how much you can cut costs without harming quality, employee morale, or customer satisfaction.
There’s a saying that goes: “You either get really good at balancing a checkbook or you make so much that it doesn’t matter.”
The more we invest in growing our awareness, advertising, and leads…the more we see company grow and our bank account grow with it.

James, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
With over two decades of marketing and advertising expertise, I’ve had a career path as unique as a plot twist in a wrestling match—literally. My first eight professional years were spent body-slamming opponents as a pro wrestler, traveling across North America and mastering the art of promotion, self-promotion, TV, and timing. But after realizing that knocking heads wasn’t knocking dollars into my bank account, I graduated college and transitioned to a Houston-based ad agency. There, I became a media buyer for Fortune 500 heavyweights like AT&T, Sleep Number, FanDuel, SodaStream, Arby’s, and Zest soap.
Craving a fresh challenge, I shifted gears to a marketing agency specializing in the automotive sector. Within two years, I transformed a division bleeding $400K annually into a profit machine generating nearly $2 million. My knack for strategy caught the industry’s attention, and soon I found myself as a marketing executive for a healthcare company focused on revenue cycle management and SaaS. In just six months, we reimagined the marketing strategy, driving the company to its most successful year in two decades.
During this time, my wife and I took our autistic daughter out to eat one night. Being autistic, there were only about 3 places in the world that she would eat. As we took her to this restaurant, she ran up to the door and it was locked. While my wife and I caught up, there was a sign on the door that said that you for the last 5 years, we’ve gone out of business. We went to another place and started speaking about why an amazing restaurant went out of business. We discovered they had everything you would want in a restaurant, except for high-quality marketing. We discovered that we could have helped that business owner keep their dream alive with the skills we had. That’s when the light bulb went on and Illumination Marketing was born!
Since we launched our business in 2017, we’ve helped to drive over $250 million dollars in revenue with clients such as GE Healthcare, Allied Power Group, Ambriza Social Mexican Kitchen, and over 100 other businesses.
Today, we are one of Houston’s Premier marketing agencies. We focus in web development, Search Engine Optimization, Pay-Per-Click Marketing, Videography, and Photography to help brands grow their credibility, presence, and revenue.

Do you have any stories of times when you almost missed payroll or any other near death experiences for your business?
During Covid, it was a scary time for many and we were included in that. Over 50% of our revenue was generated from working in the hospitality industry at the time. When government sanctions came down to shut down all businesses that weren’t deemed essential, it hit the industry hard and we were not excluded. We didn’t have enough monthly retainers to meet payroll and had to dive into our dwindling reserves. Luckily, we were able to pivot. We started shooting more videos to help companies pivot during an uncertain time. In addition, we started doing SEO for companies to help them get found on Google. A few short years later, this became the core of our revenue.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing our clientele has been consistency in our marketing efforts while leveraging relationships.
Since SEO became a core part of our offerings, we’ve applied those same strategies to our own business. Ensuring we’re easily discoverable online has brought in a steady flow of inbound leads. Ranking high on Google speaks volumes about our ability to do the same for others.
We also take a proactive approach to lead generation. Rather than waiting for clients to come to us, we identify businesses that could benefit from our services and craft personalized pitches. Highlighting specific ways we can help their business grow shows we’ve done our homework and that we’re serious about collaboration.
