We recently connected with James Joseph and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, James thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?

Yes i have been blessed to earn a full time living doing what I love. It was a long process to get here. I did so many free tattoos and made hundreds of mistakes before getting to this point. My clients apparently saw something in me that I didn’t see at the time. I started getting booked for shows out of town and magazine interviews out of no where. At that point I knew that I had to keep going.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

I started tattooing 13 years ago out of my living room as a self taught scratcher. In 2012 I linked up with my close friend Eric and decided to open our first shop called Dreamteam Tattoos. As the years went on I travelled the country doing tattoos. I have been featured in tattoo magazines, done tattoo conventions, college tours and most recently was on prime time reality tv.
One of my biggest accomplishments was being able to give a home to some of the dopest tattoo artist in the city. Dreamteam was hub for urban tattoo artist in the city.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?

When I leave this earth one day, I know that I left behind some amazing art to tell my story and my legacy will live on though my hundred of clients!

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?

Having good business practices is the best way to build up social media. Referrals will always be the best form of advertising. You do one good piece and they will post you and then Atleast 10 people will follow you every time. Eventually that number multiplies
