Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to James Jackson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi James, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.

Flame Candle Company started in 2018 when I was helping book an artisan market and we couldn’t find a candle maker to book for the market. I had been making candles for friends and family for a few years before 2018 but never thought about making it into a small business. However, I took this as a sign as an opportunity to share my love for creating intentional aromatherapy candles. I partnered up with a great friend, did some research, and created Flame Candle Company.

James, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

Flame Candle Co started as a handful of all-natural soy candles and has grown into 3 extensive lines of candles, bath soaks, body oils, room sprays, and hand sanitizer. I learn more about business everyday and have been grateful to surround myself with a network of other creatives and business owners. What sets us apart from others is the true passion of collaborating with local vendors, makers, and artists. We utilize as many local materials as possible because our mission is to create consciously and showcase our amazing community.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?

At the beginning, it has been a smooth road. However, when we started we were only doing in-person markets, and when Covid-19 hit all live events were canceled, so our main line of income was no longer a viable option. I truly thought we weren’t going to be able to continue. However, I started doing some research about websites because I knew we would need to begin online sales if we wanted to make it. Once we began our website, it was a lifesaver. I added free local delivery as an option for local customers, and people responded really well. During lockdowns and quarantines, it was such a pleasure providing a sense of comfort for people. We had overwhelmingly positive responses about our candles, and it revived my passion to keep going.

We’d love to hear about you met your business partner.

I am so very grateful to have an amazing partner who has been my biggest cheerleader, thought partner, and supporter, Julie Gervais. We met around 2008 in Austin through a mutual acquaintance and became close friends. We have been through a lot together and Flame Candle Co would not be what it is today without her centered and calm demeanor, perspective, and insight.
