Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to James Glenn Jr. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, James thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
To be successful you have to have a different mindset. Being a success takes long hours and hard work, so you must be wired differently. It takes making sacrifices that others may not want to make. It takes discipline that others may not have. It takes a mindset that you will give anything to accomplish what you set out to accomplish and you will not rest until your objective is complete.
When I first started in this business, I had a lot to learn. I was a small fish in a big pond. I was a low man on the totem pole because I was the newcomer. But the way I made a name for myself in the logistics industry was by never turning down work. When a customer or client asked me if I could do a job, my answer was always YES. It did not matter where when or what the job was, I always said that I would get it done. This mindset allowed me to stand out in the industry as someone who can always be counted on when a job needs to be done.
There was a point in my career where I was on the road from 5 Am to start and did not get done until 2 AM that night. I would travel from PA to Maryland to Jersey and then to New York. It was this drive and determination to get the job done that led me to the point where I am now in my career.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
The name of my business is Glenn’s Transport and Assembly, LLC. I formed this business in 2014, under the name of TCGoL Deliver and Assembly. The TCGoL stands for The Crazy Game of Life, which is the name of 1 of 2 fictional novels that I have written and published.
I first started out as a helper in 2011, where I learned my craft. Then in 2014 after researching the business, I got my first contract with XPO Logistics. With them I began delivering and assembling Pelotons, as well as providing service for Toys R Us and Sports Authority. We built play sets and assembled fitness equipment under those contracts. From there we got numerous contracts but our most lucrative contract was with Installs Inc, which partnered with Best Buy and Sams Club. With this contract, we began installing and mounting TVs on the wall and installing anything else that Best Buy or Sams Club sold.
Present day, I broke free from the big box retailers, because I realized that when customers purchased service from them, we were being sent out to perform the job. Many customers were upset with the pricing and the customer service that the big box retailers provided, so it was my mission to provide the same great service at a lower cost and with better customer service.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I built my reputation by being willing to take any job and to get it it done correctly. I was the person that could be called upon at the last minute to cover a job or to fix someones mistakes. By doing this I was able to help the big corporations save tons of money, by being more efficient and not having to waste time trying to contact other servicers. They knew they could always count on me, and trust and reliability are 2 of the most important factors in this market.
Have you ever had to pivot?
A time I had to pivot in my business career was something that I had been planning from the beginning. I wanted to break free from the big box retailers and to be able to provide service to customers without their assistance. The time came when I noticed a certain big box retailer was trying to take more control over my business, so it was time for me to break free. I slowly began marketing myself on apps like Yelp and Angi. Once I built up my clientele, it was possible for me to make the move.
