We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful James Gilmore. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with James below.
James, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I knew at an early age that I wanted to pursue filmmaking! I come from a family that loves to watch movies together and at the end of each film everyone gets up out of their chair from the theater or their couch and leaves. I’ve always been curious to see all the names of people who worked on the film. “Who are all these people?” I used to say to myself. I was always captivated by the stories, the characters, and most of all, by how certain films made me feel. I was immediately swept away by the emotions of joy, wonder, fear, and hope. But what struck to me the most was the idea that someone had created this world, brought these characters to life, and told a story that could make people laugh, cry, and dream. I always thought outside the box like this as a child and that is when I knew I wanted to pursue filmmaking,

James, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
For those unaware, I got my start when I got the opportunity to direct a low-budget documentary film. The project was risky, with a tight budget and a challenging script. However, I poured my heart and soul into the story, I was determined to make it a success. After the film was released it opened up more opportunities for me. Shortly after, I got to write my first feature from a novel. I am still in the process of selling it but those opportunities would not of been there If I didn’t succeed with my documentary.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
There is one specific goal that started me on this journey. I want to earn an Oscar! My journey is marked by a deep love for storytelling and a relentless pursuit of being unique. My ability to blend visual artistry with emotional depth has earned me space to share my stories. I will continue to push the boundaries of my craft, always striving to tell stories that resonate with authenticity and heart. For me, filmmaking is not just a career but a lifelong passion, and my dedication to my art is evident in every frame of my work.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a filmmaker is your control of the stories you want to tell the world. After college, I struggled to find my seam. I took on various jobs within the industry, working as a production assistant, a grip, and even a runner. These roles, though menial, allowed me to network and learn the ins and outs of the film industry. After a few years of this, I found my way and through those experiences, I find it most rewarding because I know I worked hard for this.
