We were lucky to catch up with James Davis recently and have shared our conversation below.
James, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. One of our favorite things to brainstorm about with friends who’ve built something entrepreneurial is what they would do differently if they were to start over today. Surely, there are things you’ve learned that would allow you to do it over faster, more efficiently. We’d love to hear how you would go about setting things up if you were starting over today, knowing everything that you already know.
I would definitely capitalize on every opportunity presented to me. It’s been times when I didn’t manage my time and make proper sacrifices to level up. I would put aside a set amount of money every week to go towards whatever it is I’m focusing on, like studio equipment for example or even new clippers.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hi everyone, my name is James Davis but in my field of business people call me “JimmyChoo JC” I have my own Record Label and I’m also a performing artist. I’ve been in this industry since 2008 and I’m enjoying every bit of the journey. Oh it takes a lot of late nights and early mornings. On top of that it takes a lot of money. In the music industry fashion is what sets you apart from the others so I decided to become a vendor in which I sale high end shoes and clothes. People can come to me with a budget or even just a particular shoe or clothing that they want and I order it for them in a timely matter. Brands like Versace, Louis Vuitton, Christian Louboutin, etc. I also cut and style hair. I’ve been barbering since I was in high school. Once I graduated high school I went on to complete barbering school at Atlanta Tech
Can you talk to us about manufacturing? How’d you figure it all out? We’d love to hear the story.
When it comes to high end fashion it’s very important to pay attention to details. First off I went through several vendors that supply my inventory and trust me, I shopped around looking for the best pricing and quality. You have to spend money and may lose money trying to get the quality that you’re looking for. As an entrepreneur you have a vision and you won’t stop until that vision is met. I found my vendor by buying numerous vendor list that I found online. Taking chances after chances is what it takes and can’t be afraid to take that leap. You don’t always succeed the first time.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
In my case funding came from my 9 to 5 and also from income tax. I had to also build my credit score to get loans. I’m currently working on getting a credit line for my business credit to get the capital that I truly need to separate myself from the old me to the new me. I say that because I’m my own competition and I’m always trying to find a way to do better than I did before. So I save and pay off my net 30 accounts in the proper time frame to keep good credit history.
