We were lucky to catch up with James Darby recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, James thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Are you happier as a business owner? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job?
I really like running my business. It has thought me so much. The hardest lesson for me was to realize that I need other people to run it and grow. There is a group of people that have joined my business in the last few years and are helping me grow it in different ways. I could never do all these on my own. My business was founded on good and truth. I asked God to bless it and help me drive it daily and I believe he has a lot of energy and love invested in my business.. i am not perfect and my team and customers know this as I tell them that I am only human. But we do our best. We sweat and grind for every customer. Our expertise earned through the years has given us an edge in the industry and we are doing everything we can to grow with it. There is so much advise now a days, on coaching, technology, Marketkng, business plans, and Customer service. I found it’s important to keep up to date on all these things and I can only do this with my teams help. I am nothing without them. Destiny has brought the right people to ride with me on this journey. I am thankful for them and I am thankful for having the opportunity to lead. Being a business owner doesn’t necessary mean you are the boss. I work for my clients, for my employees, for the independent contractors that serve my business. I serve them. It’s a mutual cooperation type of deal. I just happened to be the one who founded the business and took sone risks to be where we are today. I thank God for that.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a lucky husband to an amazing woman, Virginia Blanco.. together we have a lovely 6 year old daughter. We love the outdoors, riding bikes, going swimming, camping, snowboarding. I love soccer, must Thai, exercising, and surfing and I try to practice all these as much as possible. When things get hard or life brings us lemons we run to God and we trust in Him. I am very proud of USA Financial Consultants. It has grown tremendously and it’s still growing. There is so much I need to do to get the business where I want it to be. Sometimes I work too much on the daily operations that I am left with little energy to continue the growth of the business at the rate of speed I wish I was growing it. But it’s all about the journey so I have to take después breaths and just do my best in business and my personal life. Both have so many tiers and layers, we just need to do our best and prioritize on the important things, taking care of the little ones as we go.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Technology. I believe the internet, social media, and technology are the main drivers of reputation these days. Although reputation is not that important for me as we are all Human and we are all flawed. Driving your name across regions can have a great impact in business.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I was raised in Lima Peru and I had to survive and hustle to make the day. Some of the things I learned during those years had to be unlearned when I got to a place of confort and had my own family. Things like trust. It was hard for me to trust but I’ve learned to trust. Things like thinking in others as much as I was thinking in myself. When you have so many people around like family, customers, employees, third parties to the business, sub contractors it is hard. You cannot remember every story and every personal issue someone brings you. But I do my best to try to remember and help, and be there for them. I pray daily for the issues others face. I pray daily for my issues and everyone’s problems around me. I unlearned to be selfish to be part of family and community.
