Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to James Cox. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
James, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
I do wish I started my podcast earlier than I started it in February of 2020. I had seven prior podcast I created before we (Blake Moseley, co-host) and I founded “When Words Fail Music Speaks” Podcast.
For a short run through of the past podcasts I’ve created are…. “James VS the World” where I would talk about my life living with Cerebral Palsy. “2nd Hand Banter” Where me and my friend John would discuss random topics”. I had “Gen X” where my friend Tom and would talk on how this generation is not what it was when we were coming up in the world. Both born in the 80’s. I also had another podcast with Blake Moseley on how no one has conversations any more, always on their cell phones.
But “When Words Fail Music Speaks” Podcast is on a whole different level to it own right. It more than just two guys talking about how music helps with their depression. It’s telling the world and the millions of people who have depression that their not alone and it’s okay not to be okay and there is one sure fire way to calm your depression down or get rid of it for that moment in time that you have it, that way is to listen to music.
We do not want anyone to feel the way we do when we’re depressed, we made the podcast for you….the listener.
I think if we started it sooner than we did, we could have impacted more lives than what we’ve done so far.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
A little bit about me
Born with cerebral palsy in Austin Texas in 1980 my dad is a retired colonel in the United States Air Force, my mom was a teacher/substitute teacher. I had a pretty good life and still have a good life now. With my dad being in the air force we moved a lot. From the Philippines to Virginia to Florida, and then in Sumter South Carolina where my dad retired for 30 years.
I have one sister who lives in Virginia, she moved there a little while after my dad retired, she has a husband and a son and a daughter.
How I got into the podcasting industry
I started podcasting in 2015 I’d say. I heard about podcasts through the news or a friend, I can’t remember which though. I had 7 different podcasts (not at the same time); none of which really took off as well and “When Words Fail Music Speaks”
We’ll one day I was out with a friend and he jokingly said “James, you know what…you know too much about music.” “You should do a podcast on and about music”. So I did; I asked Blake Moseley who I met in college and three years later….Here we are.
What we are most proud of
What we are most proud of is the fact that we have come this far!! I can’t believe the people we’ve met though the podcast, I hope to make this a full time business one day.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The fact that people are listening to our show every week is rewarding for me. Not about the number but the fact that letting people know that their not alone in the battle with depression,
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to “unlearn” comparing myself to other podcasts. I really struggled with this idea when I first started. Remember….comparing yourself to others will only hurt you in the end.
Other people are on their journey, stay in yours.
