We caught up with the brilliant and insightful James Council a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
James, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s jump right into how you came up with the idea?
When I was a kid my mother use to purchase VHS tapes from yard sales and the Flea Market. She knew I loved watching all kinds of movies and it drove my love of creativity in writing as well as storytelling. I use to ride the bus in the morning thinking of story lines and saying one day I’m going to be a great movie director and create visuals for the world to see. When I turn 18 years old, a month after I graduated from high school I join the military because I grew up in a home where we were less fortunate and we struggled a lot financially. I join the military not having any financial education because they didn’t teach me in school and it was never taught at home. This would proved to very detrimental to me because I was so young and uneducated financially that I would get into over $25,000 worth of debt which began my journey on educating myself about finances and pulling myself out of all of my debt and building a better net worth. Then one day I thought about my children and how I was so disadvantaged in my financial knowledge coming into adulthood because I came from poverty and a place where they didn’t give us those vital tools to understand finance. I want to educate my children and children who were just like me on finance with my talent of story telling and something they could relate to and that is what started me writing my first book Rich Kidz Biz “Business Basics” and then writing my newly released second book Rich Kidz Biz Health + Wealth Gold Edition. I haven’t become that great movie director quite yet, but I have created a story to initiate change. A change to START THE CONVERSATION in the way we teach our children about wealth, finance, entrepreneurship, nutrition, fitness and mental health. Even if I never get the opportunity to direct and put my work on screen I hope my words in these books impact change in our youth to inspire the greatness that we already see.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
For anyone that doesn’t know me I come from a less fortunate background but I have always been a person that wanted better for myself, my family and for them to not to go through the same struggles I’ve been through and I want to pass the knowledge that I learned to every child. I want families to start the conversations at home that we never talk about because we think children will not understand but they understand more than we know. Also, being an entrepreneur is one of the best ways for children to educate themselves on finance. I am the Command Financial Specialist for my command the USS Winston S. Churchill and I help counsel sailors on finance daily. I love it because I get to give them something I didn’t have coming up in the US Navy.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding from my journey of being an author and entrepreneur is that when I have children, adults, and fellow military members come up to me and tell me how my books have inspired them in so many different ways it makes me understand more of my purpose and my continued service that I want to give with the knowledge I have gained. I can’t explain the amazing feeling I get hearing that it has changed their life.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source for new clients is networking. Social media helps a lot with that but networking and finding other entrepreneurs and people who have the same mind set and goals help me increase my audience because they tell their clients about me and I do the same for them. This journey is so much easier when you build a tribe of people who have the same agenda and are genuine about seeing you succeed and you want the same for them.
