We caught up with the brilliant and insightful James Cosgrove a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, James thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
My goal is to bring history back to life. We can learn so much from our past, the good, the bad and the ugly. My main goal for Project Past is to bring you interactive and informative videos of battlefields, museums, and other places that have shaped our country. I think studying/knowing history is critical for society to continue to progress in a positive direction. History has taught us just how cruel and evil humanity can be at times. If we don’t learn from these moments we are doomed to repeat them.

James, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Ever since I was a kid, I’ve loved military history. I think I get it from my father who is a huge history buff as well. I can fondly remember watching marathons of war movies together on the couch and him explaining them to me. I was also the kid that played “army” in the woods for hours. The neighbors probably thought I was a weirdo. In high school, I took a basic video editing class and I became extremely interested in editing and making videos. I started Project Past in the summer of 2021. It was a way for me to bring historic sites right to your living room. It was also a way for me to combine my 2 hobbies/interest, military history and video production.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
With this platform I’m able to bring battlefields and museums right into the comfort of your own home. I’ve had several people message me and tell me they’ve gotten to see and learn about things they may never get to visit in their lifetime. This was an unexpected but rewarding way for me to keep the lessons of history alive.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I really enjoy learning new things within the military history realm. It seems the more content I create, the more I learn. Knowing this, it helps keep me motivated and excited to learn more.
