We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful James Barnes. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with James below.
Hi James, thanks for joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
The most meaningful project of my career was a publication with Klueless Magazine, a London-based fashion magazine, created during one of the most transformative periods of my journey as a photographer. The editorial shoot took place at the Louvre in Paris — a location I had dreamed of working in long before my career became international.
The opportunity began at London Fashion Week, where I met the owner of Klueless Magazine. That connection quickly grew into a collaboration that carried me across multiple fashion capitals. During that same season, I photographed New York Fashion Week before traveling through London, Milan, and ultimately Paris, documenting fashion and culture across each city.
In Paris, I worked alongside designer Lauren of Pa.nache Clothing, creating an editorial story photographed at the Louvre. Standing there with my camera, shooting in one of the most iconic artistic locations in the world, felt surreal — especially knowing how far I had come to reach that moment.
What makes this project so meaningful isn’t just the images themselves, but what they represent. I went from chasing opportunities locally to creating work on an international stage, moving city to city with nothing but vision, persistence, and belief in my craft. That experience marked the realization of a lifelong goal and confirmed that photography could truly take me anywhere.
Since then, every project feels like extra credit. That chapter reminded me that the purpose of my work is bigger than a single shoot — it’s about storytelling, travel, and capturing moments that connect art, fashion, and culture across the world.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is James Barnes, also known creatively as Lit the Photographer , and I’m a world-travel fashion and portrait photographer, creative director, and visual storyteller based in Tampa, Florida. My journey into photography didn’t begin with access or industry connections — it began with curiosity, persistence, and a desire to document life in a way that felt cinematic and meaningful.
I picked up a camera initially as a way to capture moments and people authentically, but it quickly evolved into something deeper. Photography became my way of translating energy, emotion, and transformation into visuals. Over time, that passion grew into Alchemy Life Photography — a brand built around the idea of turning ordinary moments into something timeless. The “alchemy” represents transformation: taking someone’s vision, confidence, or story and elevating it into imagery that changes how they see themselves and how the world sees them.
My work spans fashion editorials, model development, brand campaigns, event coverage, and international fashion weeks. I’ve photographed across major fashion capitals including New York, London, Milan, and Paris, collaborating with designers, magazines, and emerging talent while helping models and creatives build professional portfolios that open real industry opportunities. Beyond photography, I also provide creative direction, visual branding, and short-form video content designed for today’s digital landscape.
The problem I solve for many clients is visibility and confidence. A lot of talented people struggle not because they lack ability, but because they lack strong visual representation. I help models, artists, and entrepreneurs present themselves at a professional, editorial level so they can attract better opportunities, partnerships, and audiences. My goal isn’t just to take photos — it’s to help people step into the next version of themselves.
What sets me apart is my perspective as both an artist and a builder. I understand the creative side, but I also understand branding, storytelling, and growth. Having traveled internationally with my camera, I bring a global fashion perspective while still keeping shoots personal and collaborative. Clients often tell me they feel seen and empowered during sessions, which is something I value just as much as technical quality.
What I’m most proud of is building my career through belief and consistency — going from local shoots to photographing fashion weeks around the world and publishing international editorial work. Every milestone represents years of dedication and faith in a vision that didn’t always look realistic at the start.
What I want people to know about my brand is simple: my work is about transformation. Whether it’s a model stepping into their first professional shoot, a brand defining its identity, or an artist creating visuals that match their sound, I aim to create imagery that feels intentional, elevated, and lasting. I don’t just document moments — I help create defining ones.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Going outside and networking . Eventbrite and posh have tons of safe events near you in every city especially major cities . Music/Art/ and or anything creative is a great start to meet people

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
Non creatives will never fully understand a creative . It’s like a different realm of existence. My best advice is to portray/ articulate your creative vision as strong and authentic as you can in hopes that the masses can grasp a slither of your true energy
