Hi James, thanks for joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?

After my brain injury in 2006 I knew that I wanted to do something different for a living. I had these creative spells and ideas would just come to my head. In the hospital my mother would make and bring in so much wonderful food. Especially these candied pecans. I’d eat them by the big bag full. Years later My Mum’s Nuts was born. Little did I know that it would be My Mum’s Nuts CBD Creations now.
So this transformation was a gradual process. Going from making candied pecans in different flavors to creating techniques of naturally infusing cannabis into coconut oil and making different flavors of cannabis cookie spreads to making topicals and finally hemp derived CBD products.
I remember when I realized I should start making topicals. When I was making these canna cookie spreads for dispensaries under prop 215 I was always in the kitchen a lot. When I would be cleaning up and getting the infused oil on my hands I’d notice my hands would go numb. I thought if this happens topically from my oil then it must be very great pain reliever.
Not just pain relief though.
My list of different ailments my topicals relieve still grows.
But this long road I’ve been on was very needed for it’s given me the knowledge to make CBD products that are at a top shelf level.
To be able to really help people live in these material bodies in this material world is so rewarding. I knew that this was a worthwhile endeavor at that point.
My whole standpoint this whole time has been to provide a product that gives you relief with the healing attributes of the array of cannabinoids without the unhealthy factors that are on the market. All the candy, chocolates, gummies and topicals that are made with unhealthy oils or other ingredients are counterproductive.

James, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

My name is James Balmer. I make and sell hemp derived CBD products that are natural, healthy, vegan and 3rd party lab tested.
My products help my customers with relieving their pain, anxiety, insomnia and so many other things.
My products are not only healthy and natural but they are versatile too. Coconut oil is a wonderful topical or edible. Human or pet safe.
I also use hemp seed oil and my newest product is water soluble so it’s great in drinks!

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?

I remember when the laws for cannabis were up for debate. At that time we were all under Prop 215 making cannabis legal for medical reasons. We all had cards that were used to purchase from dispensaries or private events. The small cannabis business owner was able to provide medicine for their patients. When cannabis became legal the small cannabis business owners were pushed out by the big business owners who were able to afford the fees and lawyers.
I decided to change my products to all hemp derived CBD to be able to make and sell everywhere. I found the best CBD from farms in Colorado and Oregon so I was confident my products would be as effective. Now my products are now even more effective for making them for so long and constantly finding and using the best oils and other ingredients.

We’d really appreciate if you could talk to us about how you figured out the manufacturing process./

I make everything I sell from scratch. I lab test each batch to insure potency for my customers. I got my food handling card and set up my kitchen as a cottage food operation.
I still use the knowledge I picked up from years of being in the piercing industry too.
When it comes to aseptic and sterilization techniques.
My family on my dad’s side were famous chemists and my mum is the best in the kitchen. So I have them to blame for this.
