We were lucky to catch up with Jamella Gross recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jamella, thanks for joining us today. Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea
My idea started from a want and need for more. When I first became a parent I had this feeling of not wanting to work for anyone. I’ve obtained many jobs in my life but nothing as satisfying as being able to work for myself. One day that all changed as I scrolled through social media I kinda had an epiphany about what I wanted to do with my life. I kept seeing people say good things about Shopify and I decided to give it a try. I got the courage to go out on a limb and start my own business with less than $50 in my pockets. Just a hope and dream. I had to learn everything there is to know about owning an online store. As a professional chef doing anything other than being in a commercial kitchen was a nice change of pace for me. It all started with an idea to let my children have their own online store and it gradually became so much more than that. It became one of the proudest moments of my life next to being a mom.
It had its times when I felt like giving up because there were some flaws with my website and having to pay to get things fixed when you’re already struggling. In the end it’s all worth it. Never give up on your dreams.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I got into being a small business owner as a dream that manifested itself. One day I was watching TikTok and someone was talking about affiliate marketing and it peaked my interests. I got into doing Shopify collabs and that eventually led me to finding out that through them to start my own business and the rest is history. I think my creativity and diverse background helps me stand out from the rest because not only am I a entrepreneur, I’m also a professional chef that does hair and nails in my spare time. I’m such a “jack of all trades” if you will. I’m very skilled with my hands and such a fast learner. I’m most proud of the fact that despite suffering from severe anxiety from trauma and having a major depressive disorder I didn’t let it stop me from living out my dreams. Yes, sometimes its hard but don’t ever quit. There’s someone in this world who’s waiting for someone like you.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source of new clients for me has definitely been social media honestly. My first ever sale came from a woman that I didn’t know who lives in Oklahoma. I was so surprised that my little ole business could reach people in that way. It made me feel so proud of myself. I knew then that nothing in this world could ever stop me. Sometimes its difficult because you would expect the people closest to you to be your biggest supporters but it’s always the ones we’ve never met.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to unlearn that everyone isn’t your biggest fan especially in the beginning. Sometimes it takes a little convincing or even a good enough pitch to get them going. You have to stay strong though and don’t give up.
