We recently connected with Jamelia Johnson and have shared our conversation below.
Jamelia, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
The generations before me really inspire the legacy I intend to build. I think about the ways in which their sacrifices paved the way for me to dream big enough to break the mold, to choose radical love, and acceptance. I hope that my legacy empowers others to do the same. Fill the world intentionally with self-love and self-care and you’ll see true unwavering love. I’ve been very intentional about making this a value and declaration in Body Jam Essentials. “Home-Glown” – glow from the inside (soul) out (skin). To answer plainly what I feel our legacy will be, is Love.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Of Course! Peace to all the beautiful readers reading this now! My name is Jamelia but most people call me Jam. A Jersey girl in DTX on a mission to curate community self-care experiences that empower wholeness, self-actualization, and self-love.
I am committed to the gifts bestowed upon me in the areas of holistic wellness, healing, and beauty. I’ve used these gifts to establish an intentional veggie based and herb infused skincare and wellness brand, Body Jam Essentials.
Through my given ministry, I hope to empower as many as I can with joyful, impactful, and therapeutic experiences.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I truly believe what has helped me build my reputation within the market is my intentionality. From the beginning, whether it was the product feel or the medicinal benefits, I wasn’t afraid to continuously test and educate myself to create the most intentional products or provide the clearest information about their benefits. My brand has grown with me and this is an added layer of authenticity. What I encourage in others is what I’ve tested on myself. Sharing is caring and I deeply care.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Since becoming a full-time entrepreneur exactly a year ago, I’ve had to unlearn the belief that I have to do this all on my own. This hyper independence that exists within the Black community, in women, is fake news. We need our tribe to thrive and the quicker we embrace that, the quicker we can cultivate prosperity within our communities. There have been several moments and reality checks through this first year which is why I know this to be true….You need people!
