We were lucky to catch up with Jameelah Nelson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jameelah, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about how you went about setting up your own practice and if you have any advice for professionals who might be considering starting their own?
I started my own practice shortly after graduating from medical school. I knew how to be a doctor but what I didn’t know was how to run a business. One of the biggest challenges most new doctors make is thinking that once they open their practice, patients will start calling and signing up for their services. I learned very soon that it doesn’t always work like that. Because… just because you open your doors doesn’t mean people know that you exist. It was important to promote yourself on social media, in local groups, or anytime someone asks you what you do.
In the beginning, one of the biggest steps I took was hiring a business coach. I have hired many coaches along my journey. I believe that my business coach gave me a headstart on all the tools I needed to put in place to run a successful business. My coach also taught me how to market myself, create a niche, the power of mindset, and a plan which is very important to learn early in the business.
My advice to new docs is first to hire a business coach, limit your overhead and decide what specialty you want to be known for.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Dr. Jameelah Nelson. I am a naturopathic doctor, expert in natural medicine, postpartum specialist, and best-selling author. Through my private practice and online books, I help overwhelmed and exhausted new moms restore balance so that they can step into motherhood with a renewed sense of confidence, energy, and joy.
I became a naturopathic doctor from my own health challenges with postpartum depression and wanting to create a healthier lifestyle for my family. In my practice, I provide holistic healthcare for women and children using natural medicine. I specialize in postpartum and pediatrics. My vision of my practice is to break unhealthy generational habits passed down. I believe if I heal the mother and teach her the tools to raise healthy children, we can heal and change the health conditions of future generations.
My practice focuses on getting to the root cause of your illness. I always use the analogy that if you mow your lawn it will grow back every week but if you put the grass up by the roots, the grass is gone and you will have to plan it again. Our goal is to determine the root cause of your illness so it doesn’t keep coming back.

If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
I would absolutely choose the same profession to become a naturopathic doctor. I am truly passionate and love what I do. I think the world needs to know about the healing power of naturopathic medicine.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I started my practice during the pandemic. I had to pivot completely from my original plans for my practice. I had to get out of my comfort zone and begin to promote myself completely online such as through Facebook lives and videos because most in-person events were canceled. I also had to add telehealth as a service.
