Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jameelah Muhammad. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jameelah, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So, let’s start with trends – what are some of the largest or more impactful trends you are seeing in the industry?
As a custom designer, the biggest tread right now is turning cooperate wear into street wear. Rocking ties and suits with sneakers. Or, loafers with jeans and oversized tees. Personally I love it. It’s creating a fly look for office wear!
As far as my clothing line, oversized streetwear is trendy. The comfy clothes; like sweats, hoodies, and the like. But, up the size for that oversized look. It’s like MySpace days ( I might be showing my age) when everyone wore big clothes!
It’s actually better than the tight look in my opinion.
The only concern is, sometimes people tend to overdo things. It doesn’t even make the look unique anymore. I think it’s important to view the trends but you must find a way to make it your own in order to stand out.
No one wants to stand out anymore. Everyone wants to look like triplets. Got to try another lane some time.
I get it, it’s popular. But show other people how you can rock the gear YOUR way.
Jameelah, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a designer and I own a street wear brand called PASE. Fashion has been my life since, well, since I can remember. My parents are really fashionable. I’m from a big city (Boston) where there’s sooooo many different people from different backgrounds so I always seen different styles. Coming down south, it was different. It was slow in the world of fashion. I always had to create my own look.
I started off just doing T shirts then I started sewing! My mom taught me how to use a sewing machine after she seen me sewing by hand.
My clothing line is street wear, cozy. Comfy fly pieces. But I also design one of one pieces such as prom dresses, duffle bags, even a wedding dress before!
I love bringing pieces to life. Most importantly I love when my customers see me bring their wants to life.
I realized I’m different from others because I’m just doing what I love. Would I want to do it for a living and provide for my family, of course. But Im doing what I love and I’m great at it. Sometimes I make pieces and think “God literally created me to create”.
I shock myself at times.
I take pride in and I’m super proud of the fact that I never give up. No matter the views, likes, when business is slow; I don’t give up. How could I? My brain is always thinking of another collection to create.
As far as my brand, I want people to see my star and know “THATS PASE” just like we see a boat and know Nautica, and the like.
I know people think you need a big team. Sometimes, all it takes is a dream and the drive! At least to start! And know deep down the reason why you’re doing what you’re doing.
Have you ever had to pivot?
My biggest pivot to date. The loss of my grandma. I wouldn’t say I wanted to quit, but I sure didn’t want to be social. It took everything in me to complete the two prom dresses I had started.
Unfortunately, stopping isn’t an option when starting a business. I’m on the front line. No one speaks for me. No one posts for me.
I had to realllly remember why I’m doing this.
And just got “back in the game”.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
POST POST POST! I use to hate posting the same thing. I felt like I was begging people to buy my pieces. But, I realized, every time I post someone new could see. Even if they don’t buy, they see. They see the brand, the logo, the name. The next time they see they’ll remember. Don’t be afraid to post. Social media is the best thing for creators. You can create from the comfort of your home and the entire world can see your creations. Use it!
