Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jamecia Bowers. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jamecia, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love for you to start by sharing your thoughts about the pros and cons of family businesses.
Family businesses can serve as amazing platforms for building relationships and fostering connections among employees. While they can be challenging and bring a different level of stress at times, family-founded and operated businesses can be incredibly fulfilling. Drawing from personal experience, my journey began in my family’s business. I began my career as a dental assistant in my father’s, James Bowers DDS, practice, Bowers Dental Center, Inc., working alongside my mother, who served as the Office Manager, and my Aunt, who handled financial matters. After becoming a licensed Esthetician and gaining a year of experience in the industry, my father proposed transforming the storage area In the dental office into a more beautiful and functional space. With him working part-time at the office, I took charge on the other days, creating a cozy spa environment. In 2012, Beauty by Bowers Day Spa was launched, with my mother, aunt, and even my cousin assisting at the reception. The unwavering support and contribution of my family members was truly inspiring and instrumental in my success. However, it is not always easy and the disagreements can be more intense than in a typical work environment due to the nature of the relationship between employees, it is still, in my opinion, well worth it. Yes, you have more to lose but together much more may be gained. While I do not have children yet, if my future offspring expressed interest in working with me or taking over the business when I reach retirement, I would be immensely proud.

Jamecia, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Jamecia Bowers and becoming an aesthetician was a path I stumbled upon. I hold a Biology degree from Florida A & M University with my initial aspirations being to follow in my father’s footsteps as a dentist, I worked alongside him post-graduation and pursued further education at Georgia State University. However, my interest shifted towards makeup, prompting me to delve deeper into my passion before committing to dental school. This led me to enroll in the International School of Skin, Nail Care, and Massage, where I acquired my Aesthetics license in 2011. Falling in love with aesthetics and the beauty industry, which aligned well with my biology background, I began working part-time with a holistic aesthetician and interning with a celebrity makeup artist. Leveraging my father’s dental practice, I transformed the unused space at the back of his office into the Beauty by Bowers Day Spa in 2012. When my dad retired I ventured out to new locations but have remained in the Tucker, Georgia area. I love being able to treat my clients like family. Having the flexibility to cater each appointment to the specific needs of the individual seeking care is of the upmost importance to me. I specifically designed Beauty by Bowers as a cozy chic boutique spa functioning as a personal oasis and haven from everyday life stresses. I want my clients have a place relax and unwind. Spa services include facials, hair removal, eyelash extensions, waxing, body treatments and professional makeup application. I understand that good health is the key to beauty, which is why I take the time to address my client’s skincare concerns, educate them on skin health, and create a custom tailored treatment plan.

How do you keep your team’s morale high?

Understanding how your work positively impacts you and others can serve as a powerful motivator during difficult times. When faced with obstacles that threaten to wear you down, reconnecting with your purpose can provide both stability and clarity, guiding you back to your ultimate goal. So, hold onto your “why” tightly as it will light the way through the darkest and toughest times.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
