We were lucky to catch up with Jamecia Arestil recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jamecia, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being a business owner force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
I’m definitely happier as a business owner because of the freedom that comes with it. The opportunities are limitless, and I love that. I’m the one who always turns left when everyone else is turning right. I was always that way since I was a little girl. It’s nice to have a safety net where you know you have a consistent income coming in. I actually worked for years in corporate and had my business on the side. But I realized I had to choose myself. So, although at times, it may appear that it is better to work at a different company, I believe having my own business is more fulfilling. I have the freedom to be more involved in my community and spend more time with my family. I would not trade that feeling for anything else. I remember when I was working at corporate, don’t get me wrong, I loved my job and my coworkers, but I started feeling that although things appear to be going well, deep down inside, I was not happy. I felt trapped and the only way I was going to break free was to leave and be on my own just like a butterfly. Working at corporate, we had to complete these request forms each time we needed a day off or going to doctor’s appointments or even just to take a vacation. I don’t like when people have that much power over me. I remember the last time I had to complete one and I made a promise to myself to never complete one of those again. I don’t want to give someone power over me to choose when I take time with my family.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Jamecia, I’m a business strategist. I’m on a mission to inspire people to upgrade their life. What that means is I help everyday people realize their full potential by providing access to the right tools needed to take control of their life. I’m here to help them gain clarity, monetize their life, and create world class impact.
I’m a mom to 3 beautiful children, wife to an amazing to an amazing guy and passionate about teaching everyday people how to make more money & increase their network.
I grew up in Orlando FL in a strict Christian home. We migrated from Haiti in a search for a better life. I witnessed my dad working 2 to 3 jobs just to keep the lights on and I did not want that to continue with me. So I pushed myself to graduate high school and eventually graduated college top of my class. After college, I started mentoring young girls so they can avoid negative behaviors and achieve success. I hope to encourage their ambition, empower their confidence, and help keep them on track. This is my way to pay it forward. And that’s really how it started. I started mentoring at my local church in the youth ministry, then started going to different churches and to schools and eventually small groups.
I’m known as the people’s coach: “the one you need in your life and business.” I specialize in business development and strategic coaching for emerging and established business owners who need an extra push in their businesses. I coach the people society has rejected, that’s the single parents, the college dropouts, the unemployed, the divorces, anyone who desires to create their own future, but somehow has been hit the hardest.
I’m most proud of the results I see in my clients once they go through one of my programs and do the work. I’m big on impact. I’m a true believer that I am my brother/sister’s keeper. So, it hurts to the core when I see anyone suffer. I know we were all created to live well. We all have a gift and must dig deeper to find that gift.
If you feel you have been going in circles, I want to tell you this is your season. Things are about to shift for you, but you must do the work. Take action today.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
The one thing that helped me is that I’m true to myself. I show up as “Me” and I’m also humble.
I’m a Caribbean girl and my community doesn’t allow for authenticity. They don’t believe in standing out of the crowd. They want everyone to blend in. I broke that and I think people in my community were hungry for that. Whatever you do, just be yourself.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
I built my business with my savings. I did not want any loans and it was the best decision I had to make. I opened my first tax business inside a sandwich shop. I create my own business cards and buy all used furniture. After only 2 tax seasons, I was able to move out of that space into my own office. Sometimes, people get so caught up with all the money they need to start their business. All you need to start is a plan. Once you have a plan, then move toward execution.
