We recently connected with Jamaya Fleming and have shared our conversation below.
Jamaya, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
This entire journey has been a huge risk but I’m forever grateful for it. Starting nursing school at the same time as launching my magazine, The Poster Gworl, after a while became extremely difficult causing me to choose. Choosing between going the guaranteed route that makes the most sense to people vs. taking a leap of faith-going with your gut and trusting God, what a decision right? I eventually chose to trust where God was leading me, and chose to quit nursing school taking on Poster Gworl full time. Taking this risk has been one of my biggest blessings and I’m so excited to see where it continues to take me.
Jamaya, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am Jamaya Fleming, a 23-year-old from Memphis, TN and I am the creator of The Poster Gworl magazine and podcast where we focus on all things fashion, beauty, entrepreneurship and lifestyle. I love fashion and beauty and as a former D1 athlete, I’ve always been into sports. I always get asked about what I wear, how I do my makeup, or just my overall confidence so this is really my way of expressing myself to everyone else while also highlighting others. We get to the core of what a poster “gworl” truly is. Being a micro influencer/creator, it’s so hard to get the attention of vogue or these other high-profile platforms. I created the poster gworl magazine to shed light not only on myself but other fashion creatives and entrepreneurs as well. Growing up I was always into fashion blogs and magazines so one day, I decided to act on that interest. Little did I know it would turn into the platform it is today when we’re literally JUST getting started.
The Poster Gworl is not your usual magazine. Now yes, we are professional, but here we focus more on funky fun as opposed to the clean-cut look. I think that’s what sets us apart from other magazines. We kind of have a fashion-comic book vibe, it’s super cute. You know that feeling of excitement you got when receiving your Teen Vogue or Seventeen magazine when you were a teenager? I want people to feel that type of excitement x10 when meeting my brand and that’s pretty much what we’ve been receiving. I’m most proud of the fact that the brand feels so relatable for people. My viewers tell me all the time that their inspired by me and my journey and that continuously pushes me to go forward because entire time, I’m home stressed out about if people would think my “idea” is even worth all of this or not. The reassurance means EVERYTHING. I’m just happy my testimony is making a difference this early on.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I think the best way to answer this is by starting off with explaining what exactly a Poster Gworl is. A Poster Gworl is one who embodies and embraces their own form of uniqueness. Someone who isn’t afraid to go outside the norm when it comes to their aesthetic. A Poster Gworl is authentic to herself/himself while being the front pioneer in fashion. I want to inspire as many people as possible, young or old creative or not, to be the best versions of themselves that they can be x10. When people have their encounter with me, I want them to walk away more confident and inspired to take on the world. I’m striving to create Poster Gworls all around the world. I know the wonders God have been working in my life and strive to share my testimony with people to share his greatness. Everyone has a story and a path their destined to follow whether we like it or not. I’m forever grateful for my path and hope it continues to inspire others.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, what’s most rewarding about being a creative is the ability to be myself and impact others. I’ve never really had a problem being myself, but in this space, you can do just about whatever and people wouldn’t really be surprised especially with the times we’re living in. The freedom of character is amazing.
