We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jamario Battle. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jamario below.
Hi Jamario , thanks for joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I wanna say, the year 2009 was the actual year I wanted to pursue the DJ pathway. It was summer 2009, I moved back to Rocky Mount, NC from Greenville, NC to live with my mother & stepfather. My mother had a laptop that she gave to me. I believe it was a Toshiba. At the time I was collecting music and I came across a music software called “Mixx.” The software had a mix broad where there are knobs to equalize the songs and two-channels and a crossfader. I would end up dragging and dropping the songs from my iTunes and start mixing songs together. A year later (2010), I ended up downloading this software called “Virtual DJ.” This software was like a beginner DJ kit but, I didn’t purchase my turntables until 2011. It had a lot of different features and effects to making the music a more live experience than, the “Mixx” software.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Jamario Battle…my stage name is DJ Forbidden. I’ve been a DJ for at least 13-14 years now. Getting into this field is a bit of some works and patience. Like once you get your turntable, always practice on a regular daily basis. Practice always makes perfection because, you want to show your audience and business corporation your very skilled and acknowledgement to the music. In the beginning, you want to network with people that gain information about certain opportunities. The bigger picture to the opportunities is to get a relationship with the people your networking with. That’s how you understand them and gain trust. There will be a lot of “No’s” but, never let that discourage you and your talent. You just keep knocking on different doors and keep having that strive for success. With my service, everyone always ask me if I do weddings? And I answer, “Of course.” Weddings are like the most fun experience when DJing. Your actually making a memory for them and yourself. When it comes to what I’m bringing to the wedding, I tend to bring my laptop, turntables, 2 wireless microphones, 2 built-in amp speakers, a mixing broad, 2 speaker stands, some batteries for the wireless microphones, a laptop stand for the laptop. Now if there’s any problems towards my client, more unlikely its because of the format of the music that they want you to play. But, they will tell you upfront before you get that opportunity. To my standards, I think what sets me apart from other DJ’s is that I literally have my own style. All DJ’s have their own unique style. Being honest, I wanna say that the best most outstanding proud part about being a DJ is that I never gave up on it and I kept it consistent through all these years.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I wanna say is that I can keep creating new things to better the sounding of music today.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Support each other to fullest amount. Use the social media market to show mural support. Even show up to there events to show support. It doesn’t take long to show someone support especially, if you know for a fact there extremely good at something that they’ve been doing for quiet some time. It’s easy for someone to say something good about you in your face verses posting a story, a picture at an event and just down right telling the whole world about that particular person.
