We were lucky to catch up with JaMarcus Toomer recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi JaMarcus, thanks for joining us today. What’s one of the most important lessons you learned in school?
Morehouse will forever hold a special place in my life—a place where my dreams were nurtured, where my resilience was forged, and where I discovered the true power of an education. The hardships I faced along the way only served to strengthen my faith and reinforce the incredible honor it is to call myself a Man Morehouse.
While having a degree is an awesome feeling, I appreciate all the experiences and lessons I learned from people along the way. The people we meet and the experiences we have, the environments we are in are all a reflection of who we are inside. Mentors, coaches, friends, and even random strangers all have a tie in connection to one another.
A lesson I learned at Morehouse was the significance of staying true to my vision and myself. It’s easy to get swayed by societal expectations or the opinions of those around us, but staying grounded in our own beliefs and aspirations is key to living a purposeful life. Morehouse taught me to define my own path, to set ambitious goals, and to remain committed to them even in the face of challenges or doubts from others.
Developing self-confidence was also an integral part of my Morehouse experience. I discovered that believing in myself and my abilities was the catalyst for my growth today. By acknowledging my strengths, nurturing my skills, and identifying areas of opportunities to develop, I built a solid foundation of self-assurance and, awareness. To overcome the challenges and pressures of being different in a world that encourages conformity, the opinions of others or getting distracted by irrelevant matters, I found solace in self-reflection and self-care. Regularly taking time to evaluate my values, reassess my goals, and realign my actions helped me stay on track. Seeking support from mentors, friends, and a supportive community provided guidance and encouragement during moments of doubt or uncertainty.
JaMarcus, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Allow me to introduce myself. I’m a proud native of the Southside of Atlanta, Georgia, born and raised in a family dedicated to serving others and the community. My journey into the industry began with a passion for rap music, dreaming of making it as a rapper. Little did I know that this pursuit would unknowingly build my confidence and expose me to environments I once thought were out of reach. Through this experience, I discovered the transformative power of self-belief.
During my time at Morehouse College, I balanced being a full-time student by working multiple part-time jobs in Atlanta. This period provided me with memorable experiences and ignited a passion for marketing, brand management, and entrepreneurship. As a brand ambassador for a black-owned sneaker shop called Heet Atl in Little 5 Points, I immersed myself in Atlanta’s culture, fashion, and the importance of marketing. This experience, combined with my love for rap music, sneakers, and fashion, deepened my understanding of the value of creative talent and the significance of marketing in today’s world.
Through personal encounters and experiences at work and school, I discovered a knack for helping people become effective in their business strategies. I specialize in content creation, business counseling, brand management, and strategy. I assist businesses in thinking outside the box in today’s economy of social media marketing and strategy, emphasizing the importance of being effective in every effort.
What sets me apart from others is my ability to fully accept the consequences and repercussions of my choices and decisions. I understand that progress requires enduring dislike, facing challenges, and persevering through rejection and abandonment. I pride myself on embracing life’s simplicity and finding joy in the small things. I am comfortable with who I am and who I am growing to be.
I am most proud of the people, coaches, mentors, and friends who have had a positive impact on my life, even if it was only for a brief moment. I am grateful for their support and for witnessing my growth and development into the person I am destined to become.
One of the significant alliances I have formed is with my business partner, Dr. Rena Lyons, a business psychologist and emotional intelligence coach. Our connection was serendipitous, and together we have built a strong alliance based on shared values and a commitment to empowering others. Our collaboration allows us to bring a holistic approach to our work, blending psychology and business strategy to help individuals and organizations thrive.
In summary, I invite potential followers, clients, and people to know that I am no expert in what I do, and that’s what works best for me. Your perspective shapes your reality, and your beliefs are the foundation of your success. I am a people person, genuinely interested in learning about others, their greatness, and how they make a positive impact in the world. In a world that often pressures us to conform, the importance of being true to yourself cannot be overstated. Embracing your authentic self is not only liberating but also essential for personal fulfillment and success.
When we conform to societal norms or try to fit into molds that don’t align with our true nature, we suppress our uniqueness and limit our potential. It’s important to recognize that each of us has our own set of talents, passions, and perspectives that contribute to the rich tapestry of humanity. By staying true to ourselves, we honor our individuality and bring something valuable to the world.
Being true to yourself means embracing your strengths, values, and aspirations, even when they may diverge from the expectations of others. It requires courage and self-acceptance to stand firm in your beliefs and make choices that align with your authentic voice. While the path of authenticity may be challenging at times, it leads to a sense of fulfillment and genuine connection with others who appreciate and resonate with your true self. Let’s connect, collaborate, and together, make a dent in the universe.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source of new clients has been a never ending journey of positioning myself in environments where I can find potential clients that I can provide value for. Whether if it’s a nice restaurant, bar, networking mixer, business event, practically every place you go is a potential source of new clientele. I’ve been in restaurants having a meal by myself, only to end up talking to a random stranger and seeing the opportunity to provide value present itself. I encourage business owners to surround and immerse themselves in places where others will need you. Accept the reality that someone out there needs your help, your service, your product.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn was caring too much about things that were out of my control. Mental de-cluttering. I had to unlearn unhealthy thinking patterns based on personal circumstances and experiences with people, places, things, and situations. I had to learn to accept the things I could not change and own the things I could control. The backstory behind this notion comes from having too many expectations for things that did not have the best interest of my being to begin with.
We pick and choose our battles everyday, knowingly or unknowingly. I had to learn that a lot of my troubles and circumstances were a reflection of my own world inside. One could say, immaturity, but I’d like to hold myself accountable and accept that most of the time it was self inflicted.
You cannot expect too much from people, places, or things in this world. You have to call a spade a spade and have a real sense of discretion, discernment, and discipline.
