We were lucky to catch up with Jamar Hébert recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jamar, thanks for joining us today. Any advice for creating a more inclusive workplace?
Creating a more inclusive workplace is essential for fostering diversity, collaboration, and innovation. I can vividly think back to many moments in which I have worked in organizations lacking diversity – I even wrote an entire book based on this experience, “The Only Black Man in the Room.” I can vividly recall many instances in which it was clear that certain team members were consistently interrupted or ignored when expressing their ideas. It became evident that these individuals, who belonged to underrepresented groups, were not being given equal opportunities to contribute.
Recognizing this issue, I decided to address it by initiating open discussions on inclusivity across my network through every channel available to me, including writing my book, leading mentoring efforts, and reaching out to younger professionals in my network. I have long emphasized the importance of creating a safe space where everyone’s voice could be heard and respected. I encouraged colleagues – even at times when it was uncomfortable – to actively listen, appreciate different perspectives, and challenge any biases or stereotypes that might hinder inclusivity.
Over time, I have seen more organizations slowly but surely embrace these principles, and positive changes started to emerge. By fostering a more inclusive environment, we have witnessed increased collaboration, creativity, and overall team morale. It’s progress that more professionals today feel empowered to share their unique insights and experiences, which ultimately led to more effective problem-solving and better outcomes for the project.
This experience taught me that creating a more inclusive workplace requires continuous effort and awareness. It is crucial to cultivate an environment where diversity is not only embraced but also celebrated. By valuing each individual’s contributions and ensuring equal opportunities for growth and success, organizations can truly harness the power of inclusivity.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I entered the business world with a strong desire to not only make a good living, but create meaningful change. Growing up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, I was instilled with a deep sense of community involvement and leadership from an early age. I carried these values into my academic journey, where I graduated from Southern University A&M Laboratory School, serving as the President of my class and various student government associations.
Currently, I am employed at a top telecommunications company, where I hold the position of Manager for the Customer Operations organization. In this role, I have the special opportunity to lead and serve others, focusing on enhancing customer experiences and promoting diversity and inclusion within the company. Additionally, I had the honor of being selected as the Chairman of the Diversity and Inclusion Council for the Southeast Region, where I have been able to contribute to fostering an inclusive workplace culture.
In early 2016, I embarked on a new entrepreneurial journey and established my own company, J. Hébert Companies. This multi-faceted investment company aims to bridge the gap between consumer needs and wants by strategically investing in various industries such as fashion, entertainment, consulting, book publishing, and more. Through J. Hébert Companies, I strive to create opportunities that positively impact individuals and communities, fostering economic empowerment and growth.
What sets me apart is my unwavering commitment to making a difference. I firmly believe in leading by example and inspiring others to reach their full potential. I have authored two self-help books, namely “Dream It. Plan It. Do It.” and “The Only Black Man in the Room,” which serve as guides to help individuals accomplish their goals and unlock their true potential. My books are not just words on a page; they reflect my dedication to mentoring and inspiring others, even beyond the people I can meet in person.
I am most proud of my involvement in various organizations and initiatives. As a proud member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., I have been able to contribute to the advancement of African American communities and serve as a role model for young men. I have also been actively engaged with the Boys and Girls Club of Alachua County as a board member, where I have witnessed firsthand the positive impact of mentorship and support for young individuals.
Throughout my journey, I have been fortunate to have incredible mentors who have shaped my path and inspired me to strive for excellence. From my mother and oldest brother, who instilled in me the importance of leadership and academic achievement, to influential figures like Jacqueline Vines, a former General Manager and Senior Vice President of a large telecommunications company, and the late Tommy Dortch Jr., a trailblazer and community activist, I have learned valuable lessons and gained invaluable guidance.
I am a firm believer in the power of mentorship and its ability to transform lives. I have personally experienced the difference that even a small amount of attention from a mentor can make, and it has motivated me to pay it forward. Through my involvement in various organizations and initiatives, I strive to be an example and inspire others to believe in themselves, pursue their dreams, and contribute to their communities.
Looking back, my journey has been one of continuous growth, leadership, and a commitment to making a positive impact. Through my brand, J. Hébert Companies, and my various endeavors, including writing books and engaging in mentorship, I aim to empower individuals, foster inclusivity, and inspire others to reach their full potential. I invite potential clients, followers, and fans to join me on this journey of personal and collective growth, where together, we can create a brighter and more inclusive future for all.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
One of the most challenging moments in my journey occurred when I decided to start my own company. It was a significant leap of faith to venture into entrepreneurship. However, the path was far from smooth. I faced numerous obstacles and setbacks along the way.
In the early stages of my business, I encountered financial difficulties and challenges in rallying others to join me. Many doors were closed, and I faced rejection after rejection. It would have been easy to give up and return to the familiar, but my resilience and determination pushed me forward.
I sought alternative solutions, explored different avenues for financing, and persisted despite the challenges. I reached out to potential investors, refined my business plan, and continuously sought ways to improve and adapt. It was a test of my resilience, both personally and professionally.
Through perseverance and an unwavering belief in my vision, I eventually secured the funding I needed to launch my company. The experience taught me the importance of resilience, adaptability, and the willingness to face and overcome obstacles. It reinforced the notion that setbacks are not failures but opportunities for growth and learning.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
.One lesson I had to unlearn was the belief that I had to do everything on my own to be successful. As an ambitious individual, I had a tendency to take on excessive responsibilities and believe that asking for help was a sign of weakness or inadequacy.
However, over time, I realized that this mindset was limiting my potential and hindering my ability to make a greater impact. I recognized that collaboration and seeking support from others is not a sign of weakness but a demonstration of strength and wisdom.
The turning point came when I faced a particularly demanding project that required a diverse set of skills and expertise. Instead of shouldering the burden alone, I decided to assemble a team of talented individuals who complemented my own skills. Together, we accomplished far more than I could have on my own.
This experience taught me the importance of building a network of trusted colleagues and partners, delegating tasks, and embracing the power of collaboration. It allowed me to leverage the collective knowledge, skills, and perspectives of others, resulting in more innovative solutions and increased productivity.
Now, I actively seek collaboration and surround myself with a team of talented individuals who share my passion and vision. I value the contributions of others and recognize that collective success is far more impactful than individual achievements. This shift in mindset has been instrumental in my growth as a leader and has opened doors to new opportunities and possibilities.
