We recently connected with Jamar Fordham and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jamar, thanks for joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
I came up with the idea back in 2017. My plan was to form a creative collective of individuals that contracted certain services. That was until I picked up sewing in 2019. I truthfully ended up developing a passion for fashion, as well as creating prices that hold meaning. I’ve always looked at fashion designing as something extremely pure, one of the most beautiful art forms. I ended up running into a designer, who at the time was releasing his collaboration w/ new balance. In that conversation, Joedreshgoods said a phrase that would stick with me till this day. “If you have never cut & sewn a piece, then you’re not a real designer. “ and I now live by those words

Jamar, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am Jamar Fordham, a creative director/fashion designer/teacher. Our main goal here at Saint Apri & Company is to create sustainable, and functional streetwear. I currently I construct handmade garments and accessories, along with cultivating an experience that comes with the piece. I think what sets me apart is my eye for fabric and my design style. Another factor that sets me apart, is that I make sure to add a lesson into every release or capsule from Saint Apri.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
I truthfully didn’t. I started this brand with no real capital, just and idea and the drive to make it a reality. My first year was rough. On several occasions I went broke buying fabric, but I knew once I had finally broke through the first barrier that it would come to me easily. The first barrier to me is always time. I truly put 10,000 into this craft of mine. It’s always so surreal when people recognize me for my work, and that is what motivates me to make my next piece the best piece of ever made, and I’ve turned it into a recurring cycle.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
In the height of my run in 2022, I lost several people close to me. I wanted to quit designing altogether. I had flipped my car. My dad was struggling with health issues. I felt like my whole world was caving in. I knew my life was changing but I had no clue what was about to happen. I knew deep down that if I wanted to be successful, I’d have to stay consisted with my work, even through turmoil. My goal was to inspire people with my story and help them to understand that almost anything is in reach as long as you stay consistent
