Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jamal Clay. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jamal, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
In order for me to learn to teach, I had to build from different teachers that helped me go far. I studied what really worked for them and then took that and made it my own. I don’t think there is anything that I could have done to speed up the process because it was matter of timing and learning at the right time. Paying attention and time management are key skills for me. I look at what I teach, what is learned and using my time correctly. My scheduling is probably the only factor that would actually stand in my way.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
For those who don’t know who I am…. My name is Jamal Clay but I also go by the name Surf or Samurai SURF. I’ve been a professional dancer for about 10 years. I really got my first start to dance in 2003 while I was in High School. At that time, I did shows for the school and other events. Currently now, I still dance and I also teach fro Expressions In Motions and Luma Dance. I also call myself a dance consultant as I enjoy learning dance and how it can taught to other people who may not understand it. What I feel sets me apart is just me being myself. I don’t care for perfection but I do want good quality. I’m proud of how far I’ve come and my students. I love seeing them learn and get better and better every time.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
When it comes to goals, I have a few but I don’t really put them out there. I prefer using systems to help achieve my goals as the work is satisfying to me.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Having the ability to create.
