Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jamah Dacus. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Jamah, thanks for joining us today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
I was raised by a single mom, who worked morning, late into the night running a restaurant. I saw her tenacity, her kindness, her unstoppable energy and pure raw grit. She raised my sister and I to not follow the norms, to not follow the trends and to fully embrace our own unique creativity. School wasn’t important to my mom, what she found to be the most important was for us to be self-sufficient and kind. She wasn’t a helicopter mom, in fact, she was the exact opposite. She needed us to pull our weight, to help her out, and we loved the responsibility. From the age of 6 on, we made a lot of our own choices. We were wild children, we got into trouble, we got hurt, we learned how to navigate on our own. We learned valuable life lessons, and often had to lick our own wounds. My sister ad I both grew up to be hard workers, entrepreneurs, community supporters and both find that love, before anything else, rules all of it. My mom went back to school when we were teenagers, and has really skyrocketed her own professional, personal and spiritual growth. I love being her daughter, and feel blessed that my soul chose her to walk this life with.

Jamah, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started ModestMix Teas in 2014, it has super edgy branding, with a focus on organic, fair trade ingredients. I have been in the health and nutrition industry for over 20 years. Often creating unique tea blends and tinctures to help heal myself and those that I love. I chose to combine my knowledge of tea making and my ridiculous sense of humor into one hilarious, and beneficial company. I’m silly, I’m high energy and navigate against the grain.
I love supporting women owned farms worldwide, and try to procure a lot of my ingredients from them. I have a small team of five in Northern Nevada, we are like family. Everything is done in house, from the tea making, packaging and shipping. Our shop is usually blasting music, and full of fun and laughter while fulfilling orders.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I didn’t follow the rules, to be honest, I didn’t even know the rules. What I knew was that I was a solid tea maker, and that my branding made people happy and crack up laughing. I didn’t have any investors, any funding, or any clue how to launch my own company. I learned everything by trial and a lot of error. I did everything from designing my own website, creating my packaging, of course my tea blends, doing my own SEO, etc. I was a one woman show for years. Making some epic mistakes, which I’m grateful for, because I have learned so many lessons. I chose to make my brand a grassroots type brand, since the language on my packaging gets denied for all advertising, social media isn’t a big fan of F-bombs. I wanted to grow my brand organically, just like my ingredients. I have moved the company 3 times, reestablished two teams, and had to take on other part time jobs to get the ball rolling and keep us afloat. I never gave up though, I worked tirelessly to be able to pay my employees a fair wage and keep my shop running and the brand growing. Now we are in over 600 stores, and have a cult like following on our website. people can tell that our teas are handcrafted and made with love. My entire purpose is to bring people beautiful, healthful concoctions and most importantly to make them laugh. We all need some more f’ing laughter!

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
We are wild and have a lot of f*cks to give. We know our brand isn’t for every store, we know that we aren’t the big box brand, we know that we may offend people. Our brand is about empowerment in the ‘f*ck yes’ kinda way, and our customers love us for the rawness we bring. We are a small team, and work directly with our customers and our stores, we treat everyone like family.
Our team makes their own hours, we have a rule in our shop, if you’re having a sh**ty day, don’t bring that energy in. Go meditate, workout, blast music and shake your booty until you’ve wiggled the bad vibes out…. then come in and let’s rock. We are a family and we care for each other. We love donating and working with our community, bringing more support, love and laughter to those around us.
Our unique creativity, and doing things against the grain have set us apart.
